Sorry to be one of "those" guys who makes an account just to ask for help, but my windows file viewer has an annoying bug. When I double click a folder it opens in a new tab, every time. I've tried going to >view>options>change folder and search options but it says that they should open in the same window.

Any idea what's going on?

No, but have you tried restoring the default folder options?

Try sfc /scannow. Another easy to apply possible fix is automatic repair. There are other possibilities, but none more appealing. Incidentally, how long have you had the problem? Did it begin, as far as you know, about the same time you did a significant installation, made a significant change, etc? If not too long ago, then you might be able to system restore out of the problem--without also uninstalling too many programs. You can find system restore in all programs/application, (or whatever its called) in metro. For example, go to start screen, and open all programs/applications.

I will begin the system scan when I leave for work later today, but I need my computer right now. I also just got this from best buy a week ago. It was like this from the start but only recently did I try to fix it.

Check above for possibly more info. We may have been posting at the same time. Good luck on fixing. By the way, hey, take it back under the circumstances and get a new one--same type if you want.

Mine has done the same from day 1. I had assumed it was the default? I gave up trying to change it and now use Free Commander.

That's very interesting. Glad you have a solution though.

A new tab? File Explorer has no tabs (other than the ribbon tabs).. are you using a third party explorer?

If you mean it opens in a new window, then try a couple of things.

In View->Folder Options, try toggling the setting to open in a new window back and forth a few times, rebooting between each change.

On the folder options tab, check to make sure that "Lauch Folder Windows In a separate process" is not checked, if not try toggling the option similarly to the last one.

Also try clicking on Apply to all folders.

If you tick the second option, folders will open in a separate window.

The OP is using the word "tab" loosely. He means that it is opening in its own entirety.
For example, if I click "Boot", I get this

tab1.jpg

.If I then click one of the sub folders, it moves on in the same way. The root folder seems to have disappeared. As in the OP's case, there does not appear to be an option to continue to show the previous root folders. I don't have one to hand, but I recall that in Windows 7, a new window opened, but the previous window was still open for examination?

P.S. Brummyfan. The suggestion does not make the change.
