Any negatives to installing the Media Center?

I'm thinking about installing the Media Center Pack, but before I do, I was wondering if there is any reason not to? Does it have any impact on my daily tasks if I don't use it?

If you have Windows 8 Pro, it is FREE until the end of January. No impact with daily tasks.

I've had it on my desktop since October and I just installed Win8 Pro with WMC on my media center PC last weekend (didn't want to pass up the discount). Works like a charm, no problems. In fact, it shines in the living room.

Honestly, WMC is fine. It's just a terrible terrible DVD player.

My personal view on this, if you're not going to use it, then why install it? I mean, Media Center Pack is aimed at those who deal a lot with "Media". I think this is a good way to keep a computer "clean".

Windows Media Center won't interfere with your tasks unless you have other programs that deal with media. Careful with what program becomes your default.

This is your computer, if you wish to instal it for the sake of having it then by all means do as you wish.

Honestly, WMC is fine. It's just a terrible terrible DVD player.

This is a good point, VLC is a good alternative for watching movies because it supports a lot of formats. I tired using Windows Media Player but it wouldn't play many formats.

I'm using VLC myself for DVD playback. It works pretty good and I have it set up so it automatically plays DVDs in fullscreen mode. The only problem is that skins don't work in fullscreen mode, and the default skin looks like crap.

Get it simply to enable MPEG2 decoding in Windows products, if nothing else.

It's free and doesn't impact the system, so why not?

Careful with what program becomes your default.

.
just go to start screen and type in Defaults and click to open ,and make what every programs you want to be the default ,for all programs not just media player .so no big deal ,easy to change defaults

I installed WMC pack. I'll probably never use it since they removed the internet streaming, and right next to my computer is a bluray player with Netflix, etc....so....I'll probably just unpin it and forget about it.

When time comes and I want to re-install Windows 8 (clean install to remove virus/or whatever) will I have to reinstall WMC?

Yes, you have to reinstall WMC separately. the WMC license is not valid for installing, so you have to use your old license.
