I've used TweakUI since Windows 9x to easily remove Right Click New items, for example, all MS Office entries pictured below.

RightClickNew.png

TweakUI 64-Bit does not work on Windows 8 and so-called Tweak software like Ultimate Windows Tweaker lack this feature. Programs such as ShellMenuView do not clearly display Right Click New items so you can easily disable them. They display general right click items - not Right Click > New items.

I have spent the entire morning and found only 1 (one) program that clearly displays Right Click New Items to be disabled but it is $30 (Windows 8 Manager) and I have no need for its other features, just to quickly and easily remove Right Click > New items so $30 is steep for that.

Does anyone know of any alternatives for Windows 8?

EDIT: Here it is:

CCleaner> Tools> Startup> Context Menu. Uncheck the item that you don't want. And it's free.

Actually it is quite easy to take out items that you don't want displayed under New context menu:
Open Run->regedit

under: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

You'll see all the application extensions, for example: .doc is for word, .xls is for excel etc.....

Whatever you don't want to have displayed in New , just delete the keyword: shellNew for that item.

Here's mine:

I spent the entire morning looking for the easy software solution and still have not found it. But to address the above posts:

1. I've seen many threads talking about CCleaner, which I have and use. CCLeaner and many other programs list general Right Click options, not Right Click > New options.

2. It's actually not very easy at all. You have to know exactly which subkeys to look for it takes time.
[By the way, there were eight sub keys for the screen shot in post #1 above, not counting txt link:] How to easily remove Right Click > New items in Windows 8 - Overclockers Forums

We need a TweakUI replacement for Windows 8 which simply lists Right Click > New, not general right click. I have CClenaer showing almost two dozen entries whereas I now only have one txt link in my Right Click > New.

I don't know how to make it clearer.

.xls is a file extension for Excel Spread sheet
.doc is file extension for Word Document
.ppt is file extension for powerpoint
.mdb is file extension for access database
etc......

For example: All you need to do is right click on the desktop->New->Text Document and a new empty text file is created with an extension .txt
So in order to find out what extension associated with a file, you would do the same as above. That only involves a couple of clicks.
Once you know the filetype extension then go to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and look for that extension, under that tree, there's only one subkey called ShellNew and delete it.

a complete path for .doc is: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc\Word.Document.8\ShellNew
a complete path is for .txt is: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt\ShellNew

here are 2 examples for word document & Text document:

topgundcp, thank you for posting detailed instructions on how to locate the correct subkey in registry containing the information which needs to be deleted in order to remove items from Right Click > New menu.

What if there were twenty right click menu items, or perhaps fifty? What if there were more?

I am exaggerating to make a point: While certainly the task could be accomplished in the end, this is why we need TweakUI-equivalent for Windows 8, which would allow us to complete such a task with just a single quick mouse click:

I will post in this thread when I finally find it one day, but would really appreciate it if someone else bumps the thread if they find it first.

Your link points to Context Menu Tuner which appears to be freeware. I just tested it.
Whereas this freeware ShellMenuNew - Disable/enable 'New' menu items in Windows Explorer
correctly displays that .txt files are an option in my righclick menu, the Context Menu Tuner does not.
So I would still stick with ShellMenuNew freeware.

I actually came across a couple of other utilities after posting my last that also worked for me. I've dabbled a bit here and there with programming but no real development. I needed to understand enough to enable me to troubleshoot some of the electronic systems I've worked with in the past. Some C, Visual Basic, LabView, and a smattering of assembly/machine language. Python and Vim are in my target right now. I figure putting the time and effort into Vim will pay off in the end and help me make up for lost time. I was also becoming interested in some of the modeling software in the line of 'stock and flow' like Stella, AnyLogic, Sigmua, etc. Some of which have been designed with Python. The Python plugins put the hurt to Revolution R in many ways; even though... it still seems to hold its own for statistical data processing. At this point I'm not all that interested in "Big Data". We'll see. I think Python picks up the 'Torrent' trail when it comes to distributed processing. Multicore/parallel systems are a must for 'Big Data'. Research scientists can share their results much easier this way. Business too. But science is business too isn't it? Security is always a huge issue with open source. My interests are purely personal right now but if and when I do start developing software it will have to be part of the package. Learning all of this is time consuming so anything I can come across to lessen the load right? Anyway... I'm babbling.
Here's some more freeware utilities that work on my Windows 8 system. 4 Tools to Edit The Context Menu in Windows Windows appears to be truly 8 up now !:}
The link led me to ShellMenu and FastExplorer. FastExplorer digs out a lot of junk in the registry and gives the option of cleaning it up. I had about 130 typeless types hanging around. I don't like messing with the registry on a whim so I didn't bother with removing them. They don't seem to be slowing me down just yet. I might back up the registry and then zap 'em just to see what happens. I've been known to do daring things such as that on occasion.

While playing around with my Vim/Python hybridization the context window was keeping old references to a previously compiled version of Vim but not the new one. I had to recompile vim in order to get it to work with both Python 33 as well as 27. Using the 'edit with vim' in the context window would bring up the wrong one. It works fine now. The nice thing about FastExplorer is that it lets you de-activate to reference without having to actually go into the registry and delete it.

We are getting off topic on an already resolved thread but for the record, registry cleaners today are what snake oil was in the 19th century. There is no _measurable_ improvement in removing so called registry junk. More likely, it will cause a problem if registry entry required by your specific system is removed by one of these programs which people allow to blindly remove registry entries. Even though no two programs in existence remove the same registry entries, making you wonder, well which one is right? :) So I would not blindly remove a registry entry unless I knew what it is connected to.

If you really want to get off topic, then help me do something no one was able to answer for more than 20 years of me asking: re-arrange the order in which right click menu options are displayed and separately, insert a custom icon next to a right click entry.

Context Menu

Sorry 'bout that I didn't mean to go so far afield. I've never done forums that much. Basically wanted to introduce myself and a little of where I was coming from. I know this isn't FB. As per your' last comment I also was wondering the same thing. The Favorites menus in most browsers allow you to reorder them. Perhaps something could be learned from looking at the code for some of those. Chrome just might. However, this is going way beyond my focus too. Interesting nevertheless.

This one will allow you to reorder you'r menu items. Although, you'll have to remove them and put them back in the order you'd rather have. Haven't investigated it thoroughly so I could be mistaken. I was also able to use the Vim icon in the menu. Nice.
