I formatted a HD that had the bootmanager on it. The Win 8 disc can't repair it. I'm also getting a message that my C: drive is locked. Can you help me?

I would grab another computer and install EasyBCD on it, connect your boot drive to that computer (either through sata or external usb) and create a new boot file in EasyBCD. It's worked for me with windows 7 in the past, but I have not tried Windows 8.

Just make sure you select the right drive to work on as it defaults to the computer your using, and you don't want to mess that one up too!

What is your hard drive arrangement? I take it you have multiple drives, one with the OS and the other has the boot files?

Try accessing C: with another computer too to make sure it's intact.

If you still have no success, I suggest accessing C: and removing any important files and reinstall windows with ONLY that one hard drive connected to avoid the boot files from being installed on another disk.

EasyBCD is great though, it's got me out of a bind exactly the same as what your in now, except my C: drive was still OK. I used it to transfer the boot files to C: too.

Dear John,

Forgive my ignorance but I'm not sure how to connect my C: drive (with the OS on it) to another computer. Can you refer me to a link? I have two internal HDs - the C drive is a partition on one HD, the other HD i just formatted with GParted and it's not partitioned. The other partition that shares a HD with C: has backups on it. If worse comes to worse, will I be able to do a clean install of Win 8 and start over?

I suggest you reinstall then.

To make things simple, you should install windows on a hard drive with one (or none) partitions. I'm not keen on you trying to install on a partitioned hard drive as you don't know where the boot files will end up.

Re install on the blank hard drive and use what was C: to hold your backups and docs.

Once you have windows running use this to resize your files hard drive so that it's all one partition.

As a fail safe, I urge you to remove the hard drive that will not contain windows before attempting to install. This is guarantee that the boot files will end up in the right place.

Let windows setup completely clear the hard drive too. As in delete all setting, files, etc.

That's the easiest solution I think, based on what you're able to do.

Would suggest as above mentioned. If you can bout into the automatic repair etc menu, do a factory reset, it will be a clean instal on the c drive.

For future members with the same issue, you can use the Windows 7 boot repair option from a win7 dvd or a win7 boot repair disk.

Ive discovered that Windows 8 does not want to fix missing boot loaders, it always says it cant find any windows installations, it lies!

Ultimately I did a Format and reinstall of everything. Painful but not fatal.
