May be a driver issue: Windows 8 insists on using it's own drivers instead of the original drivers that were used by the OEM in Win7. See if you can download updated drivers for Win8 from HP.

It's a weird issue you have but I have has many issues with built in drivers for hardware that originally used their own drivers from the OEM (sound, graphics, chipset).

Other than that, I got nothin'.

Do you have any idea what the unknown device may be? Is there a bluetooth controller or something like that that exists but is not listed by the device manager?

My bluetooth adapter was listed as unknown device.

download the drivers for what you think it may be, if the drivers package has a setup.exe then it'll be wasy. If it's just a bunch of odd files, then go to device manager and update the unknown device, telling it where to find the drivers you downloaded by using Browse instead of search online.

You may also be able to determine what the unknown device is by disabling certain devices in the BIOS one by one. The unknown device will disappear from devmanager when you have disabled it in BIOS.

As for your original problem with black screen, I honestly don't know what else to suggest.

Unplug; take battery out; drain power by pressing power button; let sit for 30 minutes; put it back together; see what happens. Also, look in device manager and see if anything you would expect to see working is not shown to be working. You also could get your system info to help you think of things not showing up as working. Get system info using run > type "msconfig" etc.
