Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me.

My computer wont boot at all. I bought a key from microsoft online so I dont have the installation disc, and i didnt make a system image or repair disc. I did do a couple of back-ups though.

It began like this…..I was getting an 'Error 1704' message, so I ran CleanMyPc Registry cleaner to try and resolve this issue. From this point on, I haven’t been able to boot up my computer.

When I turn the computer on, it tells me that there were errors on startup and 'critical_process_died' and it starts the 'automatic repair' function. At the end of this cycle, it hasnt been fixed and i end up at the 'advanced options' screen.
When try the 'restore' function, and select any of the backups I’ve made, I am not allowed to select the drive I want and I get the message 'You must enable system protection on this drive'. - How do I enable system protection???

I then tried troubleshoot and 'refresh', and after a while i get the message 'there was a problem refreshing. No changes have been made'.
I then tried the 'reset' function which requires a repair or installation disc, which i dont have.
I have tried 'startup settings' to try and start in safe mode, but this just reboots to 'automatic repair' again and the cycle starts again..

So, i have worked through all the 'advanced options', and none seem to work for me. I do have access to elevated command prompt, this may be the only way into the computer, i just dont know how?!
Also, before I cleaned the registry I backed it up. But of course its backed up on the PC that doesnt work, so I don't know if this info is of any help.

Thanks in advance, any help is greatly appreciated

What version of CleanMyPC did you use? This kind of sounds like an issue I had with Windows 7 back in elder years where I installed 64 bit Windows and used a dated version of that registry cleaner, ran the cleaner and compactor, killed it and had to reinstall Windows.

I ALWAYS do a registry backup first when using a registry cleaner. That way, if it goes wrong, I can always restore the registry from Safe Mode (and have done). Most registry cleaners WILL prompt you to do so, and IMO it's silly not to. BTW, I use CCleaner.
Hope this helps someone.
Wenda.
