A sad farewell to an old friend.

This afternoon, I bid a sad last farewell to an old friend. I've just removed my loved and much-modified Win 8 CP installation from my
second machine before it expired, and replaced it with a system image of the machine's original and legal Win 7 Ult SP1 setup.

My first experience with Windows 8 wasn't good, I didn't like the DP at all, nor did the machine. I was reluctant to try the CP after that
but since I installed it around last April I've grown to love it. It's been very stable, most of my games and software worked and the driver
issues I had with the DP were fixed. When MS stopped updating Defender, I put a free AV on for security also Malwarebytes.

I had hassles with the RP and, to a much lesser extent, with the RTM trial version, but the CP really has been great. And it still had blur
and transparency, I miss them both.

When I purchased my Win 8 Pro retail pack, it came with both 32 and 64 bit disks. The 64 bit version has been installed and activated on
this box, and WMC added. So, for a lark, I decided to see if the 32 bit would go over the Win 7. It did, with ease, but would not activate. I
was asked to purchase another product key.

I expected this so wasn't disappointed, and indeed may do so if I can do it before the promotional period ends, otherwise the 7 setup can
stay. I's proven to be solid and reliable. That W8 test install has now been removed (I did not attempt any activation hacks at all) and
the legal W7 install is running.

The next step is to remove the DP from my old desktop box, and then I can get my Vista Ult setup back again. I do like the retail version
of Win 8 very much, and have no plans to go back to Win 7 on this machine, but the CP just looked so nice in comparison.

Anyone else still on any of the betas and what's your plan when they expire? Upgrade? Go back to 7? Or something else entirely?

Wenda.

EDIT: My Win 7 Ultimate desktop. Long time no see.

Yep.
I also got those disks around here..:)
But no usage anymore.

As a last token of gratitude, I copied the Aero theme from the themes folder in the RP install.wim (should work from DP as well) and added it to my RTM: it works BUT without transparency. That's still good since I liked the nicer borders in that theme. :thumb:

I'm also back on Win7 Enterorise. My Win8 Enterprise system crashed yesterday and I tried the Win8 Reset/Refresh (can't remember which one is the "save settings" one). Needless to say, the reset didn't keep my settings, but no data was lost. I tried to use Win* again after it attempted to reset my PC, but nothing worked, the entire thing was borked, so I went to my trusty Acronis system restore DVD , booted from it and restored my Win7 image from December of last year and I'm running Win7 again.

I'm having a lot of trouble getting Outlook 2013 to see its data file, so I'm fighting with that, but everything else went well. I'll play with Win8 on another PC, but it will be a long time before I put it on my main PC, I think.

To bad you have that much trouble with your Windows installation. Do you know why it crashed? Was it a software or hardware problem? As for your Outlook files. You might want to try open then on you other 8 pc and then save it as an 'old format' file. Then try importing it on Outlook 2010.

Good luck with the Seven installation though!

To pay more? Let's say you already own a Win7 Ultimate license. That depends. Not so many people will consider a jump from here to 8.

EDIT: After using the DP, CP and/or RP, that's another story. Most of us here seem to get along with the new 8. :)

For 40 dollars for a full license of Windows 8? Seems like a worthwhile purchase considering some have been using it since around April. Going from Windows 8 daily to 7 is like going from a lush metropolis (see what I did there with metro :)) to a semi-arid desert ruled by libertarians. It's weird, simply put.

I read you clearly.

Wasn't the 40 dollar offer(s) gonna expire in a month or two? Then you'll have to pay for at least 5x as much from what I know.

Good to know. Useful for those willing to get it.

Personally I'll stick with the Core version preinstalled on my laptop.

What can PRO offer me other than Hyper-V and Media Center that will make me get it?
I don't know. For VM's I use VMware Player.

Glad I got the cheap deal, and am quite happy with it so far.!

I really don't know what Pro offers that is needed, I'm assuming Windows 8 Pro sounds better than just Windows 8.

Hyper-V for me iffy at best and Media Center isn't useful, looks disturbing as well as seems to be better navigated with a remote control.

Then I'm good with Core version.

I'll keep it cheap and simple. :D

I got my copy of W8 Pro from my local Harvey Norman store for A$69.95. But underneath that price-sticker was another which read A$399.99!
Glad I got the cheap deal, and am quite happy with it so far.!
Wenda.

That 399.99 will be the price after the promo expires end of this month I assume.

You got a good deal. :thumb:

You assume correctly., and yes, I'm happy with the deal. I already had the WMC key sitting in my inbox, so I promptly
upgraded to Pro w/WMC. When I benchmarked it using SiSoft SANDRA, it showed as Windows 8 Ultimate.
So, an Ultimate version for $70? I'm smiling :)
Wenda.
