I'm sure the is all due to my complete unfamiliarity with Win 8, or maybe it's just old age catching up to me and I have lost a TON of brain cells very rapidly.

Nonetheless, I would like to be able to do these tasks. Is it my lack of knowledge, or can you not just simply completely close apps running from the start / metro area. To me, the only thing I can see to do is just run the cursor to one corner of my screen when I am done with the app. No exit / finish, etc....... just leave it open and run my cursor to a corner and start something else without ever really closing the app I am finished with. It / They are always still open normally in the top left hand corner of the monitor even though I am way done with it. I never see an "exit app" when using apps from the start / menu screen.

The second issue I have with is Internet Explorer from the start / metro screen. No Tabs? No Favorites? Basically no options I am accustomed to at all. I don't even think I even see a search option, although I may of over looked it since I don't want to use this iteration of IE without the options I listed above. I always resort to Explorer from the desktop because not seeing those options drives me bonkers.

Yes, I feel like an idiot not knowing the answers to these things. And even more so having to ask for advice on things that would seem to me to be so simple. And there are probably 50 more questions I could reel off, but starting with these two would help. I have become so accustomed to all previous versions of Windows, and then the iPad / iPhone that I am really feeling like a newbie.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Please don't feel that way, we all start from somewhere.

1 - When you move the mouse to the top left corner, you'll see the apps, left click will open it, right click on it then click close will close the app completely
OR:
If the App is currently displayed on the screen, move the mouse cursor to the top of the screen until you see a hand cursor, click and hold then drag to the bottom of the screen will close it
2 - When running IE10 from the metro screen, it runs the metro version, you can right click and on the bottom, there is an option to unpin it then go to C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer, you'll see "iexplorer.exe", right click on it then click on pin to Start. Then it'll run the desktop version.

Thanks for your help! But let me get this right, the latest, greatest version of IE has no capacity for favorites, tabs, etc....etc...etc...

M/S can not be that naïve, can they?

Another option to #2 to run desktop mode:

Go into internet options (just start typing "internet options" and I think the options will come up...)
In there should be a checkbox indicating whether to run the Metro IE or the desktop IE. So any time you run IE, that's what you'll get.

That's exactly what I was trying to say in #2, except your way is faster. good point.

Many ways to close apps.

1) Alt-F4 (this has always worked in Windows, and continues to work)
2) Grab the top of the app and drag it to the bottom and release.
3) Mouse to Top Left corner, right click on the app you want to close.
4) Task Manager - Highlight app and close

As for IE, yes, it has tabs. Right click on the page and you will see the options menu that includes tabs. Metro IE utilizes Pinned sites instead of favorites. You can pin any site to your start menu. Put them in a group of favorites if you like.

Any idea which key for a screen shot?

Thank you

The same keys that have always worked. Ctrl-Prt Screen and ctrl-shift-Prt Screen, which copy the screen shot to the clipboard.

in addition there is also now WindowsKey+Prt Screen which will automatically save the screen shot to your Pictures directory.

Don't overlook the Snipping Tool which is good for taking images of what's on-screen.

Suggestions:

1. Don't run IE from the metro start screen (very clumsy no matter how you set it up here IMO); run it from your desktop.
2. Leave IE as the default browser for "everything" to work smoothly.
3. Use the Chrome browser from your desktop--if you are not enamored with IE. Reiterating, leave IE as the default.
