Steam Hardware & Software Survey

If you click on OS, you can see that Windows 8 now accounts for 7% of all steam usage, while Windows 7 accounts for 70%, which means that Windows 8 is already (after only two months) in use by heavy gamers by a growing percentage.

Windows 7 lost 2% of share. It seem s that a lot of XP and Vista users jumped Windows 7 and went to 8.

The reason I went to Widows 8 was because the laptop I wanted and bought was cheaper pre-installed with Windows 8 than with Windows 7. Otherwise, I would have bought it with Windows 7. I suppose I can take credit for helping that Steam statistic a little. ;) A lot of pre-installed Windows 8 systems shipped in the last couple of months since Windows 8 was officially launched only a couple of months ago and major PC/laptop manufacturers offered it pre-installed. So those figures indeed make sense.

Hi Mystere,

well i do not find 7% a lot, the price for the upgrade in mind.

Mbratch, you lost me here. If i do not like an OS i certainly will not go for the cheaper option.

Besides Win8 is a steal until en of january.

No offence but... I think most prefer Windows 7 over 8, Windows 8 is just, not what people really want in an Operating System. But yes, for the price, it is a steal...

In most cases, jeffrys, if someone is buying a new machine, they'll take what the latest default is, especially if it's cheapest. They aren't always in a position to know if they're going to like it more or not. So once Windows 8 launched a couple of months ago, it became a default installation on several well-known manufacturer laptops for sale and then, by default (essentially) got purchased without a comparative evaluation other than it's the latest. An interesting survey, which has not been done, would be answers to the question: Why did you buy Windows 8? There would be several choices, only one of which "I compared it with Windows 7 and I preferred it". But there are many other reasons why it might be purchased, such as "I wanted to try it" or "It's what came on the cheap PC I bought" or "It was cheap so I thought I'd buy it", whatever. In short, many (who knows what percent) of purchases of Windows 8 were not due to a functional, comparative evaluation.

After 3 weeks of 8 all I can say is that 8 is GR8. For me and I realize it may not be for you.

Best advice I've read here and elsewhere is that we would be better off to buy a new pc with 7 because of more drivers and then update 7 to 8 for $14.99 because for the most part, 8 can use 7 drivers. While 8 lacks some drivers because of 3rd party hardware. You can also revert back to 7 if you can't accept 8.

Not surprising.

There will be around 320m pcs sold in a 12 mth period.

Leave Apple out of it - only a teeny percentage can afford a mac book.

Everyone else who needs a machine will have windows on it. There is no viable choice.

I don't know what proportion of that 320m or so is sold in the run up to Xmas - and the giant cut price sales straight after xmas.

Perhaps a third - perhaps half.

In spite of the difficulties oem's voiced about slow uptake of w8 machines - and the large discounts they were giving even before Xmas - pc sales were down ( allegedly by 11%).

Nevertheless, by default I wouldn't be surprised if 100+m machines have been sold.

I wonder if Gabe will end up eating some of his words when Windows 8 becomes the most used Steam gaming platform....

Seriously, I still don't get why Steam and Valve are against the Windows Store, it's like competing against ARM coded games and some Desktop games that you can find if you do an internet search. It wonder why they don't release their Desktop Steam client on the Windows Store, I hear it'll take like a few hours of tweaking to pass the certification to publish it. BAM! Exposure to a new Windows platform! Or even go further out and publish a WinRT Steam client, BAM! New market of tablet PC gaming for the ARM platform! It's like potential lost opportunities for them...

well i do not find 7% a lot, the price for the upgrade in mind.

Given that the upgrade rate of the general population has been 2%, that means 3x+ as many of the people that upgraded are gamers.

But consider, 8 has only been out for a little over 2 months (officially). 7 has had 3 years to gain its market share. I'd say 7% was pretty good.

I was just using those numbers as a base to make an example of how big 7% is considering the fact that Valve hates Windows 8 and Widows 8 has only been out for a short time retail now.

Considering the massive population of Steam, I'd say probably the sample base is a few million.
