Solved Booting from DVD

I have a new Asus S200 noteboook and I'm trying to get used to it. I have burnt a repair DVD but I now want to test it. It seems that the usual means of getting into the BIOS no longer work, so how can I boot from the DVD?

Running Win 8 64 RT.

Thanks

Windows 8 does not "shutdown" like other OS do. It sort of goes into a special hibernation mode. Thus when you boot up, Win 8 does a "fast boot", instead of the normal PC boot up of BIOS and then the OS.

There is a fix for this so Win 8 works like other OS and does actually shutdown and the normal startup with the BIOS.

See this from Windows Secrets on how to change the Win 8 shutdown.
With Windows 8, “off” isn’t really off

Usually, F2, F8 or F10 will get you into the BIOS when you power cycle the laptop. Press the key several times to get to the BIOS and you can set the boot order to boot from DVD before the hard drive.

On my system, which is a dual boot Win 7/Win 8 on separate SSD's, if I shutdown from Win 8, when I power back up it will go directly to Win 8, as noted in my comment above about Win 8 "off isn't really off". If I do a restart, then it will work "normally" and the BIOS screen will come up (and allow me to enter the BIOS or select the boot menu) and then the option to boot from either Win 7 (default) or Win 8.

I applied the change noted and now when I shutdown Win 8 it actually shuts down, and when I power the PC back on it goes to the BIOS (and the option to enter the BIOS or select the Boot menu with an F key) and then the Dual Boot screen.

Turn fast startup on/off. Try turning it off.

Great! I managed to get into the BIOS and select my external DVD drive and test the repair disk to see what was on it, so at least I know what to expect! I shall bear in mind the fast startup on/off. One step at a time.

It's all a bit weird after 7!

Thanks for the help.

Hi there
check in the BIOS to see if the Boot is set to "Protected Mode".

If it is you will have to temporarily disable it to boot from a legacy boot device like a DVD. It will present you with a 4 digit key --just enter those 4 digits -- note you won't see anything on the screen to say you've actually entered them BTW.

Now enable "legacy Boot" -- and set the boot order to boot from your DVD. You will also now be able to boot "Legacy systems" like Windows 7 / XP etc.

Note after you are done re-enable the secured boot again in the Bios if you want to. Personally I leave it off.

The whole UEFI and secured boot stuff makes life a little (but not hideously so_ more complicated.

If you don't have UEFI or secured boot then just change to boot priority in the BIOS in the usual way or use the Boot menu most machines allow you to do from boot without needing to get into the BIOS itself --usually one of these keys will get you into the BIOS at boot time. ESC/DEL/F10 /F8 /F2

Cheers
