Computer Literate but Windows 8 Confuses me

I've been using computers my entire life, and Windows 8 confuses me too.

Not because I haven't figured out how to use it, but because I am confused at how they could F up a perfectly stable and usable Windows 7 by slapping a pointlessly flashy and uncustomizable UI in our face and telling us "We like it".

I am confused as to why we have to learn arcane keyboard commands to do things we could do with a GUI in Windows 7. How are excessive keyboard commands considered acceptable UI design in 2013?? I thought we were supposed to be increasing usability for end users???

Listen up Ballmer. 97% of us are not liking windows 8. The statistics back up my statement, no matter how many paid Microsoft shills respond to this thread.

Stop calling people shills and you might find people take you more seriously. Do you really value your own opinion so highly that you feel that it's impossible for anyone but a paid shill to like Windows 8?

Full of yourself much?

The numbers are on my side. It's shills who are acting as if everyone should love Windows 8. We don't.

outside of the search included within Win8 which is apps or settings and I do have Start 8 installed which makes it extra mind boggling. :roflmao: If this is a start I wld greatly accept and appreciate help

Thank you very much

Win8 and Spybot and Destroy

Is there a difference in installing Spybot to Win8 -vs- Win 7?
Is there instructions to get the best performance from this program?

Lady8- Windows 8 isn't really that confusing once we learn a how to accomplish a few things. There's a general gist to it.

On your start screen with tiles just do a right click▬ click All apps in lower right corner▬ scroll to the right and you will see all the Apps (Programs) on your pc.
- Instead of clicking folders to see what's inside, they show folder name & list its contents right below it. Screenshot (49).png

It's a good idea to keep Desktop tile in top left corner of Start. Then you can go to Desktop by clicking the tile -OR- pressing Enter on keyboard as long as you haven't right clicked a different tile.

If I understood your question right. The installed items is the same as for Windows 7, ie. C:\Program Files if you are running Windows 8 32-bit, or either in C:\Programs Files or C:\Program Files (X86) if you are running Windows 8 64-Bit. The Items installed in Windows 7 are listed in the Start Menu and listed in Star Screen for Windows 8. There is not much different, it's just the GUI interface. You don't really need to use the search function, in the Start Screen, just right click anywhere, you'll see a pop up task bar like on the bottom, click on the icon on the bottom right, you'll get a list of everything installed in Windows 8 and if you right click on an item and on the bottom. click on "open file location", it will open up the folder where the file is located.

FYI, Windows Keys do exist in all versions of Windows, except there will be additional Keys for additional features. For example, there are 127 useful Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows 7. and were carried on to Windows 8, there's nothing new so I don't understand the business of learning the new keys in Windows 8.

I am running Windows 8 64-Bit and I understand what u r saying in regards to win 8 vs. win 7 but I guess where I am getting confused is that I was using win 7 with Firefox and now I am using win8 with IE10 and as far as locating and being able to find items that I usually do Is not as easy as it once was.. Bookmarks n such the library which shows where and how my favorites were is totally different.

My Norton just expired and I uninstalled it and I am going to download AVG 2012 antivirus and Spybot which I guess I install on win 8 as I would win 7.. I have CCleaner installed....That is really to sum that later part up is the reason why I wanted to submit an HJT report to whereas U All can help if needed on item installed on a New Laptop were necessary are not which I totally understand regarding the Report.. But is there another way I can have someone look at what is installed b4 I install these items

outside of the search included within Win8 which is apps or settings

There are several ways to Search. Which searches for Apps, Settings & Files.
1- way to Search is the Charms bar. Move mouse to top right corner, it pops out & you click Search.
2- way to Search is Windows key & start typing in a blank area for what you are looking for.
3- way hold down W and press Q once (my preference because it saves steps & time)

Hello and welcome!

First things first, you will see some people hear posting random, potentially troll-like comments that detract from the original topic.

Setting that aside, Windows 8 can be a bit tricky to learn at first, one must need an open mind to learn it. You obviously are willing to learn it, so that's good! :D

The main thing you need to know is how to pin things to the Start Screen yourself. This is simple. When you're on the Desktop, within File Explorer, you can go and right click on Computer, a hard drive, folder, Library, Control Panel subcategory, or a program shortcut; and then hit Pin to Start from the context menu. This will make new tiles appear on Start, which will reduce your need for Start8. You can simply click and drag the tiles around to where ever you please.

Second, while on the Start Screen, you can right click anywhere and hit All apps on the bottom command bar. From there, you can scroll over and right click on pretty much any program or app, and hit Pin to Start or Pin to taskbar from the command bar. This is your basic Start Screen usage.

Next, the new metro apps. This is the trickier part.

When you launch an app, it'll go full screen. You can open another app, then then move the mouse pointer to the top left corner, click and then drag to snap it. To change app settings, move the mouse pointer to the top or bottom right corners, and move towards the middle side of the screen. This opens the Charms bar, which is the primary way to interact with the apps, such as searching (both from your PC to apps to the internet) or sharing (email, social networks, or other apps that share), using other devices (if you're in Reader and want to print off a pdf file, this is used; or switching to a secondary display), as well as settings (app settings, a few system settings and power options). Click on the Settings charm, and you can change app settings right there. Or if you want to search within the app, you can just literally start typing right away. To close the app, move the mouse pointer to the top of the screen, click when you see a little hand, then drag it down. It's pretty fun! :)

You will also need to right click often within the apps. For example, in the News app, you can right click to switch to different news sources or videos. Or in the Music app, you right click to hit play. Or you can just use your keyboard's multimedia controls.

This is mostly the basics of it all, hopefully you can uninstall Start8 soon and Start using Windows 8!
