Happy New Year to All. We are going to have an incredibly exiting new year's eve. :D We'll be watching Times Square midnight two hours earlier.

I am live on my Win8 lappy having connected to this machine using RDC on my Win7 Boot Camp installation. I ended up on the Win8 Desktop since the Win8 machine was on the Desktop when I connected via RDC. The charm bar doesn't work (or at least I can't get it to work)--which probably doesn't come as a big surprise. I am trying to figure out how to navigate between the Win8 Desktop and Metro, including the charms. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to get this basic task done? The main problem is that I have not yet figured out key combinations that will do the job.

By way of explanation, my Win8 (older) HP lappy is a bit clunky compared to a MacBook Pro (MBP). I was hoping to use Win8 via the MBP because it is a much nicer machine from which to work. I first tried to get the desired navigation going via Mt. Lion/RDC, but had no luck. I thought things might work better if I connected to the Win8 machine through my MBP Win 7 Boot Camp installation using RDC, but I still am having no luck with the basic navigation I am trying to accomplish.

All thoughts appreciated.

PS I am not interested in running Win8 virtually on either MBP installation.

PSS Perhaps I need to do more preparation on the Win8 lappy, e.g., make a shortcut or a taskbar pin that will take me to Metro, etc.

Found this tutorial to get me started: Shortcut to Metro Apps from Desktop. For some reason, the icons for some of the apps are not showing up after using the shortcut. I can access the "invisible" icon apps by clicking in the right vicinities. I can see faint white versions of the apps with a mouse overs.

And, this one is very good: Executable for going to Metro Start Screen. From the start screen, you can get to all apps, of course.

Now, I need to find a way to get to the charms--especially Search and Setting.

Connected to Win8 lappy this new year's day from Mt. Lion/RDC. Didn't expect it, but the Metro start screen now is accessible via the bottom left corner of the RDC Win8 Desktop. Must have missed it yesterday when connecting via Mt. Lion (and, incidentally, the "Show Start" executable I mentioned yesterday continues to work properly). Now, similar to yesterday, I need to figure out Apple keyboard key combinations (or how to make shortcuts) that will get me to the charms. Does anyone know an Apple key combination for the Windows key/Win8? None I have found online for Windows, in general, seem to work. I'll keep looking/trying things.

It definitely is more pleasant to be using Win8 on the older lappy via the MBP--even though through RDC.

Edit: Well, OK, control+esc or control+esc+d, one way or another, takes me to from the Metro start screen to the Desktop (and vice versa).

Edit: Tadaaaa and Voilá. Once I get to the Metro start screen the charm bar works. More to be discovered, but I guess my basic issues are resolved.

Maybe the last thing to say. Today, I found that if I position the cursor just right, then the Charm Bar also works from the Desktop. All is good.

I'm sorry, what? Of course it works from the desktop. It has always done so.

Well, I'd say yes and no, of course.

1. Using RDC I first started my MacBook Pro (MBP) from Mt. Lion and accessed my Win8 machine. I played with it for a while and couldn't get things working like I liked. In this regard, it appeared that the charm bar was not working using standard mouse-in-corners procedures. I did not spend enough time on the MBP at this time.

2. I switched to using RDC via my Win7/Boot Camp partition. I spend a good amount of time here because I thought Win8 via RDC might work better using Win7/Boot Camp than using Mt Lion. Actually, I spent most of my time trying to get the charm bar to work somehow. One thing I can say for sure is that the charm bar does not work in either the Metro area or the Desktop using standard mouse-in-corners procedures with RDC connection to my Win8 machine from my MBP Win7/Boot Camp partition.

3. I repeated the connection as I had done in 1--knowing that I had not spent very much time on the Mt. Lion approach initially. In brief, I then accessed the corners very carefully in both the Metro area and the Desktop and found that, with pretty precise positioning, the charm bar works in both the Metro area and the Desktop using my MBP/Mt. Lion combo and my Win8 machine and using the standard mouse-in-corners procedures.
