Right click menu not opening

I have a problem with the right click menu opening. When I am in the file explorer and right click a folder or a file it takes a minimum of 16 seconds for the right click menu to appear.
As you can imagine this makes the simplist of actions very drawn out.
Does anyone have ideas how to sort this out?

What anti-virus are you using? If you are using the built-in Windows Defender, try disabling it then test, see what happens. Turn it back on again ASAP and post results here please.

Hello thanks for your reply.
I am using BitDefender.
I am also using this on two laptops running Win 8 with no detrimental effect.

Some apps can cause lookups in the context menus. Unfortunately, identifying them can be difficult.

Try autoruns, and check the Explorer tab (all items show in the default tab, which can also be a good place to start looking, albeit daunting).

AutoRuns home: Autoruns for Windows

Try automatic repair and SFC /SCANNOW for starters. I hope one of the starters works.

Thanks for the replies. I decided to go for a refresh. Unfortunately this has resulted in windows not booting at all. I am currently using a Linux live disk to rescue files so I can do a clean install and not lose anything. Thanks again.

You are very welcome. Glad I didn't suggest refresh or reset; those would have been next on my list. I haven't heard of many cases where either has caused a boot problem. And, for some reason the wisdom of being well backed, even when doing things that generally are not problematic, has been lost to some extent.

Once you have reinstalled your OS, immediately create a backup HDD image.

Create another backup HDD image after you have reinstalled your software.
