Tomorrow is the Big Day. I will be buying Win 8 Pro and doing a clean install.

I'm going to miss the W8RP eye-candy, but someone will work out how to put it back.

I will be offline for a few daze, so can I take this opportuniy to wish you all a great New Year?

Back with Windows 8 in 2013!!!!!!!!!!

Wenda.

Yes, That's pretty much it.

We can only hope the public reject this thing and MS get the message.

If it does ok - ( and it might because the public are not supposed to see what it is about - and because there are a few even on this forum who haven't a clue and/or keep making disingenuous posts ) - then MS will keep pushing down this unpleasant route.

"Are there any nasties I should watch out for?"

Just windows 8 :)

Enjoy.

Happy New Year Wenda.

I don't even see why you are even here on the forum, most of the posts I see are you doing nothing but spreading FUD all over the place.

If you hate Windows 8 that bad, stop coming on this forum and go back to the Seven Forums.

Doing a clean install is a good way to bypass some of the gotchas. Upgrade installs seem to almost always have issues. If that's your only PC you may want to hunt up drivers for Windows 8 and have them on hand before you start. Especially for your NIC or Wireless card. It sucks when you can't get online to get the driver you need to get online. ;)

Are there any nasties I should watch out for?
For starters, be sure and run the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant.

Top bit of advice, Znod, and I have done that.
This machine ran all the betas flawlessly, and they gave me an opportunity to discover what worked and what didn't (SIW fails, but nothing else). My current setup (Win 8 Release Preview) simply loves this box, and vice-versa. I was running the Enterprise RTM trial version and absotively loved it. But sadly, it expired. Would have happily paid to keep it running, it SMOKED on this machine.

Anyway, today's the day. Off into town in half an hour to purchase W8 Pro. If I'm never heard from again, please send search-party.....

Good luck, and I should have emphasized my sig--particularly the links under it. It may pay dividend to take those three links to heart.

I hope things went well for you, Wenda! I had a much better Win8 experience when I did a clean install on my SSD instead of the dual-boot config I was testing with. I use Classic Shell as a "crutch" and I'm very happy with the performance, reliability and overall experience.

Try what you want to do with your laptop and avoid doing what MS wants you to do, many of us are being dragged kicking and screaming without our consent in to an unknown territory

Sorry for the long delay between posts. Well, I'm up and running again, and am very happy so far. Time and bandwidth constraints meant that the planned clean install didn't happen, so I have done an upgrade over a Win 7 image I brought over. This was the same Win 7 that I was running the release preview on, so I was fairly sure everything would work. Installation went without a hitch, as did activation.
I then ran Windows Update and installed them all, without any of the issues, crashes or lockups I've read about. I've updated all my drivers to the latest versions, and everything is working beautifully. I've resisted the temptation to install a Start replacement so far, and will see how it goes.
I am well aware of the risks and problems associated with upgrade installations, but I feel fairly confident that I have avoided most of them. But having said that, the clean install will be happening when time permits.
I do have a couple of questions, though.

The retail box contained two disks (32 and 64 bit). If I use the 64 bit copy on this machine, is it legal to use the 32 bit version as well, on an older box I have? Or can I only use one version at a time?

If I add WMC to the 64 bit version, I gather that future reinstalls will need the WMC product key (which I have). Would this also affect the 32 bit version without WMC? I wouldn't have thought so, it would use the supplied key?.

Will installing WMC on this upgrade prevent me from doing a WMC reinstall when I do the clean install?

You may have 32 bit and 64 bit disks but you only have the one product code. You can use one or the other on one PC. You can't legally use the one product code on two PC's at the same time. It violates the EULA. If you reinstall Windows on that PC you will have to install 8 Pro first and then upgrade to Media center with the add features option. 8 Pro will not accept the Media Center key so you have to do it in two steps.
