It wasn't a very effective demonstration of how simple Windows 8 might be to use. Unclear how long the kid spent learning how to do the Windows 8 stuff. And it didn't show that the people who watched the demonstration picked up much on what the kid was doing. They were just all amazed that this kid was doing a bunch of stuff on this touch screen as if it were a circus act.

The really funny part is the caption at the end - Intuitive, it says.

Basically, it's so obvious for children to use, look at something and touch it.

Whereas some grumpy old lonely adults are freaking out saying, "Where's the start menu!?!?!?"

If you thought that was the end, you closed the window too soon.

Pretty good. :D Makes me wish Newt Gingrich had become president. We could have gotten rid of the child labor laws and we could all be greeted by tiny humans in M$ stores throughout the USA.

Yup that's it exactly.

I put it on my wife's machine and she's tucked right into it. Although she is a bit backwards when it comes to pc use anyhow. ;)

"Dag Nabbit! Where's the horse on this new fangled Automobile? I liked my horse! I knew how to use it! How do I feed this dang thing? Where are the droppings? Why the heck did they change what was working perfect?!"

"They should have left the option for us to go back to the horse! Choice is good!"

"You mean I have to START this thing? Why isn't it always running like my horse? All these extra steps! I'm going back to my horse, this new Automobile is terrible and will never catch on!"

"I finally found a way to use my new Automobile. I hooked up my old horse to it, and pull it like a buggy! It works great!"

The horse > car analogy makes for cute humor, and perhaps a fun way to denigrate those Windows 8 users who would like to have their start button back, but it's a very poor analogy when comparing Windows 7 to Windows 8. There was a huge, totally revolutionary technology roll-over from horse to car. But the Windows 7 to Windows 8 technology step is not nearly that revolutionary. An only slightly better analogy would be if technologists figured out how to wire in a push-button electronic remote control into the nervous system of the horse and then removed the reigns so that the rider couldn't revert to their familiar way to control the horse. But the horse is still there.

I don't think Windows 8 is hard to learn at all. Some may not like it because the Start screen is a different way to access and to present an application to the user. I think that some kinds of apps have a user experience benefit when implemented in the Metro style (e.g., Netflix, recipe readers, other non-content creating apps). It's not as good at detailed document creation, organization, management, and access. JMHO.

There are plenty of other reasons not to like this thing - aside from the usability issues.

Concerns about pushing the unsupecting into the MS clouds, surveillance, advertising, closing the platform - which several leading figures in the gaming industry have raised, etc.

The poor usability is getting a lot of attention - but it is the least important concern imo.

If MS are intending to use that video as a promo piece they will not be doing themselves any favours.

It is one thing to show a kid using something - it is quite different to show adults bemused/impressed. That doesn't go down well.

I could practice how to turn over my garden rose beds with a dining fork - I could even get to the stage where I might do it fairly quickly, with a variety of entertaining flourishes built in.

That doesn't mean a dining fork is a good tool for the job.

I could also post a video of a child playing concert level piano. That just shows how stupid you all are - if a kid can do it - then why can't you?

One of the best advertising/marketing ideas ever.

Hats off this time for Microsoft and the owner of the idea.

Bravo. Wonderful.

I ask my self why I'm using Windows 8, I don't use Metro Apps, security; I never encounter any problems with Windows 7, boot time, I own a SSD and my PC is on 24/7, actually I have more problem, my scanners don't work anymore with paint or other software, it work only with Adobe Photoshop. note the s at scanners. My Windows Home Server 2011 report problem, the back up are done, but until I try to restore I have no idea if it work.

The appearance of the little girl makes it somewhat amusing - and slightly ameliorates the insulting nature of the piece.

Indeed. Microsoft has a history of using what is effectively platform coercion to shift people into a service or software that they offer which is actually late to the game compared to their competitors. This is the true essence of "Microsoft innovation".

It is silly to worry about the start button. You can buy a perfectly effective one from Stardock for $5. I can't even tell I have Windows 8 any longer except for the delays I encounter in many of my applications. I wish I hadn't upgraded, but with the addition of the start button things are almost back to normal.

Why everyone thing the complaints are all about the start button, I don't even use such thing as Start 8 or whatever, aside Classic Shell do the job for free if you are after this kind of start button replacement. If you need Start 8 or what ever, better stay with Windows 7. Windows 8 is 100 % operational without any third apps.
