It's not a matter of "better" or "worse". 64 bit Windows can access more memory, and has some capabilities that 32 bit doesn't have. That's all there is to it.

Either you computer can run 64 bit software or it can't. If it can't, you must run 32 bit Windows. If it can, then you should run the 64 bit OS.

I've read that 32-bit OS is being phased out for awhile now. So I've been careful of motherboards or computers I compare and recommend for friends at least support 64-bit OS. As well as capable of increasing memory to at least 8GB memory.
Also read that options in future will be 64-bit or 128-bit. Even if they go that route, we know they will support 32-bit for awhile.

The metro UI and Window8 RT is 32 bit.

It's unlikely we will see a 128 bit OS in our lifetimes. There simply is no reason for it. The "bitness" of the CPU refers to the size of the address space, and at 16 Exabytes there is unlikely to be any application that would ever need that much memory in our lifetime (of course never say never, but it's highly unlikely).

That's not to say we don't have CPU's that have internal 128+ bit registers, which we already have... but there is simply no need to address that much memory for any conceivable purpose we currently know.

The metro UI and Window8 RT is 32 bit.

That's not true in the slightest. Windows RT can be either 32 or 64 bit. Metro apps are similar to Java and .Net apps in that they are compiled to byte-code and then can be recompiled on the runtime to target the specific platform (32 bit, 64 bit, arm, x86, ppc, whatever).

In fact, if you look in task manager on a 64 bit system, and run various Metro apps, you can see that some are 32 bit, and some are 64 bit. For instance, most apps that ship with Windows 8 are 64 bit, like Mail or Messenger. Many 3rd party apps are 32 bit, but some are 64.. like Neflix, for instance.

I'm sure some innovative software team at some large software company will come up with a way to bloat software enough to need 128-bit addressing. It was Bill Gates who didn't think we'd need more than 640KB in his lifetime. ;)

Seriously, there are other benefits to "bitness" besides addressable memory. CPU designers could come up with some kind of processor functionality that benefits from a wider word. Who knows...

There's a big difference between 640k and 16 Exabytes. That number is hard to comprehend. So, just to give you and idea. The entire amount of traffic on the internet globally in 2013 will be 18 Exabytes per month. That's everyone.

Sure. But as has happened many times in the past, what is incomprehensible today may become comprehensible sooner than we think. I just can't rule it out. Likely? Perhaps not. Possible? Yes. :)

Microsoft mulling 128-bit versions of Windows 8, Windows 9 | Ars Technica
and look up windows 12-bit OS on google. Some articles definetly mention 8 being last 32-bit OS.

That's a lot to read into a single comment on a linked-in page. For all we know, it was an april fools joke.

There is no evidence that any hardware manufacturer is even working on a 128 bit CPU. There aren't even rumors of it. So whatever this is, it's not anything realistic and someone fell for it.

Mystere▬ windows 12-bit OS several articles by known somewhat knowledgable sources.
Wasn't it believed at one time that standard home pc users would have no need for systems greater than 16-bit & 32-bit. Definetly not 64-bit.
I believe a 128-bit OS is closer than you think. It may start out with 32/64/128-bit motherboards with backwards compatability.
As the initial pricing drops it will become more common.

There are, and will be CPU's that have various 128 bit pieces. 128 bit registers, 128 bit data paths, 128 bit math operations. Already SSE and what not are 128 bit on most CPU's. That doesn't meant he CPU is or will be 128 bit. 128 bit refers only to the amount of memory the computer can address. Don't confuse things like APU's and CPU's that can do 128 and 256 bit processing with 128 bit or 256 bit addressing CPU's.

First, even with 8GB sticks, you would need over 2 *BILLION* sticks of memory to reach the limit of 64 bit. Let's be generous, and assume we get up to 128GB sticks of memory, that's still thousands of sticks of memory you would need.

Consider that it's taken about 5 years to go from 4GB sticks to 8GB sticks, and we're just now starting to 16GB sticks in the last year.

And that is just to meet the capacity of 64 bits, not 128. There are no know 128 bit CPU's even in development. I repeat. There aren't even any CPU's in the idea stages. Nobody is realistically working on a 128 bit CPU, thus nobody is working on a 128 bit OS.

Anyone that speaks about 128 bit CPU's or OS's simply does not comprehend the enormous scale that 64 bit of memory is, much less 128 bit. 32GB to 64 bit is like our planet compared to every known galaxy in the known universe several orders of magnitude over.
