Solved Fuzzy Icons

Hi Guys,

I've been noticing some strange things with Windows 8 Pro 64-bit on my new laptop. Certain graphics and icons have been rendering oddly. It looks just like an image does on Photoshop when transforming it. Lines appear jagged and look as though the system isn't bothering to smooth them out.

I've noticed this in a few places, for example the graphic on the right of the Dropbox installer and the uTorrent and Steam icons on my desktop.

Here are some examples:

The computer has both Intel HD graphics 4000 and an Nvidia Geforce GTX 680M, which it swtiches between depending on the application (word processing compared to video rendering). The Intel drivers are the ones that are installed by Windows automatically, and the Geforce, the latest stable build.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have a good holiday,

Daniel

Hi Daniel, Welcome to the 8 forums. . .

Please forgive an old man for a silly question; have you adjusted the screen setting to any thing other then the recommended settings (native setting for your laptop screen).

Hi Lee, thanks for the warm welcome!

Not at all - It's better to ask than miss something simple! :)
This was also my first reaction, and I have tried changing it from 1920 by 1080 to a few others, but to no avail.

Thank you for your time none the less. :)

Hi guys,

As I went through the process of setting up my laptop, I noticed that the text on CMD on the laptop looked a lot bigger that on the desktop behind it. This seemed odd since the laptop has a higher DPI.

I investigated the text size to find that, by default, the magnification was set to 125%! I have not idea how this could be since it was a self-build and I certainly didn't change that setting!

So the reason the icons and graphics looked as they did was because they were being poorly up-scaled by 25%. Some icons such as Skype didn't suffer because they have large resolution icons.

TL;DR: Put 'make text and other items larger or smaller' to 100%

Thanks, that also fixed the issue on my old Win7 PC.

Good to hear; glad this helped! I hope you liked Apple Family Reunion and you have a nice holiday! /)
