Solved Brand New Computer Stuck in Wrong Time Zone

Shortly after I pressed the Power button for the first time on my brand new Windows 8 laptop, I was brought to the screen where I set my time zone. I changed the default - Pacific Time - to my time zone - Eastern Time - and continued setting up my computer. Not long after, I realized that the time shown on my computer was wrong, and when I checked I discovered that the time zone had reverted to Pacific Time.

The problem is: I cannot change the time zone! (Yes, I am an Administrator.) Whether I do it from the Start Screen or the desktop, the time zone always reverts to Pacific Time. I even tried running tzutil from an elevated command prompt - the time zone will not change.

How can I change the time zone to Eastern Time?

(P.S. I have plain Windows 8, not the Pro version.)

Hi, welcome to the forums, go to Control panel, clock, language and region, Date and Time, switch to another Region click OK, reboot, then switch back to Eastern Time zone and see whether it fixes the problem.

Thanks to both of you. This is a brand new computer, so it shouldn't need to be examined by the System File Checker. In Control Panel > Date and Time there is no selection for Region. The Region and Language control panel deals with how dates, times, numbers, etc. are formatted.

In the end, I had to boot the computer into Safe Mode and from there I was able to switch to the Eastern time zone. So far this is holding.

I've read in other places that Windows 8 seems to be 'stuck' in Pacific time, but it doesn't happen everywhere.
