I have a relatively new installation of windows 8 with just a few programs installed. Problem is my new SSD is smaller than the existing drive. Using the tutorials on this site, can I just shrink the volume of my existing HDD partition before creating the image to recover from?

Shrinking the HD to fit SSD would work ok.

You don't need to shrink anything, just back up your disk image as is, the backup only backup the Data, not the whole disk then just restore to your ssd.

Hello topgundcp,

An image is the whole system disk/partition.

I believe strgt is wanting to create a full system image backup to be able to quickly restore it to the SSD without having to do a clean install. If so, just backing up the data will not restore Windows.

Shrinking the Windows HDD partition first so it will be the same size or smaller than the SSD would be a better option for what strgt is wanting to do. :)

Shrinking should work OK, as long as there is only one OS.

Hi Shawn,
Maybe you misunderstood what I said, Data means any used portion of the disk that includes Windows OS+Apps etc....

For Example: I make a backup image of 150GB Raptor HD with 30GB of used space using Acronis, the image produced by Acronis is only around 20GB then I restore to a 80GB SSD, so I dont need to shrink that 150GB to 80GB to match the size of SSD.
According to OP, He said he only have Win 8 and few other things installed so shrinking is redundant.

Ah, ok. Yep, I misunderstood what you meant.

That will work with Acronis, but the system image feature in Windows also includes and restores the sizes and layouts of the partitions/drives that were included in the image. :(

did that with mine had to shrink it to within 10gb of the target drive's size, it seems to remove the excess.

tidy up any files before hand, you will need to run the disk optimser or defrag to change the partition size in disk managment as well.

Yes.

I did that too some time ago and you need to shrink it first if using built-in backup otherwise it will not work.
