Solved Need Admin Permission after upgrade.

I'm stuck. I ran Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant prior to installing Win 8. According to the report I needed to delete Intel(R) Pro Network Connection 12.1.12, which I did.

I upgraded to Win 8 but now I have no permissions. I'll looked at all the threads about openning a cmd windows, which I can, but since I logon to the O/S with just user level permissions I can't issue any admin level apps. I can't even navigate to my C: drive. I get 'Access is denied'.

I'm tried right-clicking on the Command Prompt and 'Run as Administrator', nothing. Which makes sense since I'm logon on with only User rights.

I need full admin rights. I can't update my HOSTS file which really screws up my FTP and Telnet sessions.

I cannot logon as administrator, so I can't change anything. Should I reinstall??

Have you tried either right clicking on the bottom left corner or using winkey-x to bring up a menu of options that includes a command prompt in administrator mode?

Yup! When I right click and select command prompt in administrator mode I get an error message:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs contorl panel". Which I can't do because I'm just a user.

Sounds to me like your install is broken. I'm not an expert on Windows 8, but that last error message you got when you tried the administrator command prompt would make me wonder. My install is a clean install, since I'm dual booting and I have no problems with that prompt when I bring it up.

That's what I think too. It's just a test machine but I'm not impressed with the O/S.

As a developer, I need full access to the machine yet Microsoft takes upon themselves to remove permissions just because they think they know better.

I've switch my development platforms to Mac and run my dev databases on ubuntu Linux to get around the limitation of windows based machines. Sad, but true.

I only load window O/S to test my apps prior to releasing to my clients.

Solved the problem by reset my install. Of course I lost all my work, apps and settings.

I'm lucky that this machine is a test bed, otherwise my entire I'd have to reinstall all my apps and rebuild the machine from scratch.

Way to go Microsoft.

Yes, I've had to reinstall quite a few times myself and it's not fun.

Did you try a "Refresh" before doing a "Reset"? Although Refresh is not infallible, its purpose is to reset Windows while retaining user applications, settings, and documents.

Nope! The initial install corrupted my system. The only way to repair the damage was a complete install. Fun.

This is why, as a developer, I stay away from Windows O/S. Windows 7 was pretty good, but I'm finding the new interface a bother. Too many windows to plow through to get what I want.

This the Win 8 PC will be for testing only. My apps run mostly on Unix/Linux systesm so I'll write my code on my Mac and develop/test on my Linux (Ubuntu) system.
