Problem adding new Windows 8 to existing Workgroup

I have a home network set up by geeksquad. They have set up a filesharing where the public drive is on my only PC with a Vista Operating sys. They have a WORKGROUP called WORKGROUP. I connect everything else wirelessly. Have 2 Windows 7 Home laptops connected. A shared printer is also connected.

I now have a new laptop with Windows 8 and just want to add it in. I named the Homegroup WORKGROUP and I can see the other computers when I click on network, but I can't access them. When I click on the other computers especially the Vista PC with the public drive, it asks for a network user ID and password. I tried everything I can think of and it keeps telling me password invalid.

So my new laptopwith Windows 8 has yet to be added to the filesharing and printer sharing. Any ideas?

Try using your logon ID and Password on the Vista Machine. Things tend to work easier/better if HomeGroup is setup on all computers possible. Be sure file and printer sharing and network discovery are enabled on all computers and that you have shared what you want on the new computer. Be sure password protected sharing is not enabled on any computer. Post back with progress or the lack of it. Your network should be shown a Private (or Home, perhaps) network on all computers. WORKGROUP should be shown as WORKGROUP on all computers.

And this may sound crazy, but your c: drive or whatever drives you have should be shared. They probably are but you do not mention this.

I have this problem frequently, when i cannot access another pc in the network, i go to the other machine, can access my pc and then my pc can access the other machine.

This is strange but i do not have an explication for this.

Just getting used to it.

But your problem might be something else.

Workgroups and Homegroups are completely different things. Vista does not support Homegroups. Homegroups is a newer service that started in Windows 7 to 'make it easier' to file share between machines. Workgroups, however, are the way Vista and prior networked (in a home setting), where each machine is configured to use the same workgroup name, in the same local LAN network, and folders are manually shared.

With Vista not supporting Homegroups, you'd have to pretty much disable Homegroup on all the windows 7 and windows 8 machines and configure them to use the more old fashioned workgroup networking methods used in Vista/XP. Disabling the Homegroup service, ensuring all machines are set to the same workgroup name, and disabling 'password protected sharing' are ideal ways to do this. If you preferred password-protected shares, getting them to work right requires more option tweaking and some bit of advanced user management/configuration which is more than I'd like to get into here. =p

Using HomeGroup for the Win7/Win8 machines will not interfere with what needs to be done WRT these machines//Vista. Regardless, there is no seriously compelling reason to use HomeGroup or not for the Win7/Win8 machines. Why do you say "pretty much" disable Homegroup on all the Win7/Win8's? You are right, of course that HomeGroup and WORKGROUP are different things and, thus, that OP couldn't have "named the Homegroup WORKGROUP.

Just to keep it simple, Use WORKGROUP for your home network.
There are 2 things you need to do:
1- After you share a drive, you need to right click on that drive->Properties->Security then click on Edit and add "Everyone" as user name in the list if it does not exist, set permission to full if you want to have full access with read/write to the drive.
2 - Go to control panel and open "Network and Sharing Center", on the left, you'' see an option "Change advanced sharing settings",
click on it.

- select "Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the Public folders"
Under Password protected sharing
- select "Turn off password protected sharing"

Then click save changes.

You should be able to to access your shared drive now.

i hate to disappoint you Topgun, what you suggest is how my pc's are set up.

Still sometimes i cannot see the pc of my wife, sometimes the laptop of my daughter.

At first it was only the laptop with problems, so i unplugged the network cable (yes i do not use wireless connections).

But later i found out that accessing my own pc from the one that i could not connect to, problem was solved......for the time being.

Then i thought it was the combo Win 7, Vista, Win 8, so installed 4 times Win 8.

As most of you know.

Now it turned out to be.......a BUG?

if so, then the bug existed already in Vista, then in Win 7, then in Win 8.

The answer I gave to the OP is about trying to connect to the PC, it asks for Login/pasword. That's just the first step to trouble shoot network problem. The next step is we need to verify all the services below are running:

COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
Computer Browser
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Network Connections
Network Location Awareness
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Server
TCP/IP Netbios helper
Wireless Zero Configuration ( XP wireless configurations only)
WLAN AutoConfig ( Vista wireless configurations only)
Workstation

@Jeffrys
Since I don't have the problem that you have so I am not disappointed. But let's look at your intermittent problem,
maybe I can put in my 2 cents.

When you turn on your PC, thru the service, it performs what's called a DNS request from your local network
to find out what Devices (Laptop, Iphone, Ipad, Media Player,Network Printers etc...) and their IP Addresses are currently attached to the Local Network and will remember thru something called "DNS Cache" for certain period of time and it will expires then perform another DNS request, perhaps thru scheduler or you can force a DNS request
by opening the Admin command prompt and type: ipconfig /flushdns or you can reboot your PC, which will update DNS Cache in your PC. Your router also have DNS cache, in which it does DNS Request to the outside world on your behalf.

Having said that, let's look in the case of your daughter's laptop. When she turns it on, the router will dynamically assign a local IP to her laptop for example: 192.168.1.20 and if your DNS Cache contains this information then everything is cool, the next day, she turns her laptop on again, the router will dynamiccaly assigns another IP address, let's say this time: 192.168.1.25 and now you cannot access her laptop because your DNS Cache is outdated and still have 192.168.1.20 as her IP address then you have to go to her laptop, try to accress Your PC and by doing that, it updates your DNS Cache again to remmeber her new IP.

To avoid this kind of intermittent problem, In the router, there is an option that allows you to assign a static IP to your device, so that everytime you turn on your devices, you'll always get the same IP asssigned for each device.

For example:
PC #1 is assigned to 192.168.1.2
PC #2 is assigned to 192.168.1.3
Laptop is assigned to 192.168.1.4

So even your DNS Cache is outdated but it still have this info.
Hope that helps.

So my new laptopwith Windows 8 has yet to be added to the filesharing and printer sharing. Any ideas?

Homegroups or the Homegroup name doesn't need any adjustments at all, it's name is not meant to be changed and has nothing to do with Workgroups but I'm sure you were just confused with that statement. :geek:

The Workgroup is a completely different method for sharing and is the old standard. Both sharing methods can work together on the same network so there is absolutely no reason to disable Homegroups. ;)

You only need to ensure that all machines are using the same Workgroup name. This requires no adjustments in the Homegroup settings. The default Workgroup name for Windows 8 is already Workgroup so no changes will be required.

Workgroup Name - View and Change - Windows 7 Forums

After that you can just set up the sharing permissions by using the sharing and security tabs which you can access by right clicking the C drive or a network folder and choosing properties. After that just make the appropriate adjustments through the sharing and security tabs.

This is same old standard NTFS permissions which has been around a long time. You do need to make sure that the time/date settings on your networked machines are all in sync and set correctly or you might get those invalid password prompts.

If you have any problems getting those settings to work then most likely you need to set up your anti virus or third party firewall to allow sharing.

You can also set up a Homegroup between the Windows 7 and 8 machines, both types of sharing use different methods to share files.

The good thing about using Homegroups is that you can add folders or files from other drives to a particular Library and they will all appear in the same place rather than having to map drives or view folders which are spread out over many different drives. This is a very convenient feature needless to say and it's a shame that many users have no idea what it's used for.

What you said is true if you only have Windows 7 and Windows 8 environment. A lot of people are having their home network set up using XP, Vista, W7, W8 and in addition, XBOX, Tivo, Media Player, etc.... Then using WORKGROUP for home networking is better solution.

Hi Topgun,

it might help, but here computers are never shut down, restart happens when MS does updates that need a restart.

but even then it does not happen, it only happens at a given moment.

But i will wait until this happens again and flush the DNS to see what happen.

Anyway, rebooting i already did without result, but will retry this also and let you know.

The last 2 days everything is alright.

You might be right, because it makes sense.

thanks

Jeff

DNS is a critical component in networking.

Any device or application using DNS will usually have its own cache: the router has a DNS cache, Windows has a DNS cache, and web browsers each have a DNS cache.

ipconfig /flushdns only refreshes your PC dns cache so if the problem still exists after running ipconfig /flushdns then you might want to reset your router is the next step.

ok Topgun,

but i wait until the next time this problem occurs. Took a print of your previous reply and did put it on my desk.

I must add: have a modem, router AND switch connected. Could be the switch, which is used to speed up the internal network.

@Jeffrys,
I have pretty much the same setup as you. With my main PC, Laser Printer, NetTalk VOIP connected to the back of the router, The last port on the router hooked up to an 8-port switch which hard-wired to every room in the house. In addition, I also have a NETGEAR XAV1004 Powerline for extra connection. The only wireless devices I have connected to the LAN are my Iphone and IPAD.

Hi Chev65,

I've tried all of this, but I still get the annoying, and impossible to work, Password Request!!
Both computer clocks are sync'ed, but still my Vista desktop can't access my Win8 Laptop!
Any ideas please?

Best Regards

Worked for Me

Topgun's 10 Dec 2012 post worked for me.

I'm adding a new Windows 8 desktop to an established XP network and it's my first experience with Windows 8.

I anticipate spending more time refining the setup, but for now am just trying to transfer user document and other data files in to the new machine and get set up to run.
