That is why it warns you before doing it that it will remove all that stuff (which gets put into Windows.old folder).

Well, unfortunately, ALL forums have folks that toss out advice, presuming the asker is fully aware of the side effects. This forum is no different.

Which is why, it's best to either ask about side effects, or take the time to Google the advice and find out for yourself.

Also, some folks seem to think that "refresh" is the miracle cure to all ails -- which it is not.

Windows 8 Refresh cautions and warns the user about what it does and what it removes before the user has to acknowledge that and click to continue.

Hello gazz,

Thank you.

Yes, all Store (Metro) apps stay. Only the 3rd party desktop apps gets removed unless you created a refresh custom recovery image before having issues.

I wouldn't trust either option.
When I checked them out on one of the previews (CP or RP) both options stated that they were going to obliterate ALL of my partitions.

Make a backup HDD image and use that.

So true, Brink.

It's saved my bacon more than once.

Definitely my preferred backup solution, by far.

    Borderline pathetic.
I did a refresh and I knew very well that my apps would be removed because of the fact that this forum made me well aware of that. I don't know how the original poster could not have seen that. The tutorial by Brink was very explicit.

yes everyone on this forum

but never really saying ALL Programs will be removed
Not true. Here is more or less what I have been saying about "refresh" for some time.

Refresh your PC—Attempts to solve system related problems without affecting your files (system is reinstalled). Installed programs will have to be reinstalled except those from the Windows Store. A list of uninstalled programs is provided. Settings will be changed back to defaults. To do a refresh, you will need to have an install medium. Install media include an install disc, an ISO, and a flash drive set up to install.

And, note that all programs are not necessarily removed.

Refresh works the same in Windows 8 Enterprise.

If that is not what you meant, then please give more details. :)
