Access Denied

Hi everyone!

Before I begin, let me state that I did do a search but nothing returned (possibly because my internet is rubbish, lol).

I'm having a problem with my Windows 8 installation; I have a file called "saves.txt" located on my C (so C:\saves.txt). I have been editing this file all morning with no hassles. But now, for no apparent reason, I can no longer save the file to the C-drive, Windows returns an "Access Denied" error dialog.

I've changed ownership (of the entire drive), I've booted into Safe Mode and attempted to open/move/resave the file to the C-drive but nothing hasworked.

I'm not sure where to go from here.

I'm not sure if this has been covered here but if it has then I do apologise.

Thanks in advance,
Seb

It sounds like this file for some reason is corrupted, I would try as follows:
Run the command prompt as Administrator, type in Chkdsk c: /f
Since C: is the drive containing your Windows OS, it won't be able to run Chkdsk while Windows is running,
the program will ask you if you want to run the next time the system reboot, click on Yes then reboot your system.

Also, again running command prompt as Administrator and type: sfc /scannow to check if all system files
are OK

Thanks for the input, topguncp.

I agree with both scans, although chkdsk will run in 8. At least by C: -> property -> tools.

Thanks for the tips.
I'm currently running chkdsk, I'll try the second scan when the first finishes.

Side note: I opened notepad and tried to save to C, I got the following dialog:

Code:
[Window Title]
Save As
[Content]
C:\test.txt
A required privilege is not held by the client.
[OK]

I suspect this might have something to do with me taking ownership of the entire drive though, lol.

Edit: First scan returned no problems/issues. Second scan currently running.
Edit 2: sfc /scannow found issues and repaired them. I tried to open the log file under the CBS directory, but it returns "Access Denied." I suppose I just need to restart and see if it fixed anything. Will update.

C: -> property -> tools ->Check will do the disk checking but does not provide you any option.
Under Command prompt you can use all the options that ChkDsk provides.

use Chkdsk c: /? to display all the options

Do you see the difference ?

also, if you use option /r , this will take a long long time, but chkdsk will mark all the bad sectors
so that Windows will avoid using them

@Sabbz
If you get Access is denied trying to open CBS.log, do this:
Hold CTRL Key, click on the file, drag and drop to your desktop, Click continue. This will make a copy to your desktop, double click to open it. After viewing it, you can delete it.

Another way is to right click on the file->property->Security->Edit->Add, enter your user name then click on check name -> OK
but this is just for your info, I hate to play around with permission on any file under Windows.

Thanks, topgundcp.

I tried your suggestions but nothing worked, I eventually reset the entire machine back to factory yet I'm still unable to save to the C-drive.

I'll just leave the machine as it is and save to the My Documents folder; not ideal but any solutions I do find don't seem to work for me, lol.

Thanks for your help.
