Upgrade Win7 32Bit to Win8 64bit

I have windows 7 32 bit installed on 2 separate drives (dual boot).
On one of the drives I want to install Windows 8, but want to use the 64 bit version to see if it runs a particular programme better taking advantage of more memory.

According to MS upgrading using the Install Assistant or Advisor will not upgrade 32bit to 64bit so I cannot upgrade at the lower price and have to buy the full install cd.

Is this actually the case, or is there any work around that will allow me to download and install the Win8 64bit upgrade at the lower price

You can do a clean install with the upgrade, just not an "in place" upgrade of 32 to 64. I've done it several times.

Thanks Guys.

This raises 2 other questions if I may.

- Does anyone know if the same product key works with both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions.
- The only 64 bit PC I have access to is a friend who is now running Windows Enterprise 8. Would I be able to download the upgrade for 8 Pro in his PC?? If not, I guess there is no where else to get hold of the upgrade installer other than download from MS?

Thanks, so if I can't download on my friends Win8 pc, I could purchase the upgrade on my 32bit PC to get the legit key, now I just have to find a way of downloading the 64 bit installer.
If anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate hearing.

Thanks.

I just ran the Upgrade assistant and after checking the hardware/apps it went online to 'prepare a few things' then came back with a message saying that the download upgrade was not available in my country/region - was connected to the GB MS site at the time.

Is this usual??

Thanks theog,
but I did not get as far as a download purchase (so no key yet) before the assistant returned the message about not being available.

I never got as far as entering a postcode etc.

When I ran the assistant the first thing it did was check the hardware and apps, confirming they were OK.
Then there was a message something like - we are going on line to set up a few things to make it easier for you to upgrade.
Then a message stating that upgrade by download was not available in my country/region.

Could this be an extraneous message as the assistant has seen the PC has Win 8 Enterprie already installed and does not know what to do about it??

Yes, you can not use Enterprire, you can only redownload the setup files.

Question.

Am I right in my interpretation of the initial comments on the 'Redownload' instructions.
I read the instructions to be implying that if I have bought the upgrade and at the time of purchase downloaded the Installer ISO from a 64 bit pc then it will be for 64 bit,

BUT
;

if later I then run the 'Setup' program mentioned in the 'Redownload' instructions page on a 32 bit PC using the same key, this time the download will be the 32 bit Installer ISO

Is this correct?

Thanks

Yes, that is correct.

When downloading the upgrade you need to

Are you sure, theog? When downloading upgrade ISO? I'm dual booting 8 x64 with 7worked x86. I downloaded 8 x64 Enterprise Evaluation (fresh install) ISO from my 7 x86.

I don't understand why upgrades would be different. Am I missing something here?

Thanks Theog.
I have downloaded and burned an ISO for the 64 Bit install (did this using an unactivated copy of Enterprise 8 installed on a second drive)
I am now downloading a copy of the 32 Bit install using my Win 7 installation.

I want both copies as I need to see if all my progs run in 64 bit Win 8 to take advantage of all my memory (I have 6 GB but 32 bit only uses 3GB max).
I have a number of progs that a friend converted to Portable apps - but they were all done for 32 Bit and he's no longer around so can't get them re-done for 64 Bit (if that were possible), so if some don't work then I may have to revert to installing the 32 Bit Win 8.
