I don't have a use at all for the metro screen. It's not a big deal as it only takes a click to get to the desktop, but it would be nicer if I had the choice of just going straight there. Do I?

I've right clicked all over the place looking for an option like that. Haven't been able to find it.

Thanks Mystere. This part of it sounds good to me.

you can simply copy the Desktop.lnk file from the WinX directory to your startup folder:

Copy
C:\Users\(you)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX\Group1\Desktop.lnk

to

C:\Users\(you)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Log off or reboot, and next log on it goes directly to the start menu.

But now so far I haven't been able to find things like C, Users, Microsoft, etc. Google hasn't helped so far, so I'll keep poking around. Edit: guess I got it now, go to all aps and start from there.

Plus, I'm not sure about the last part I quoted, "it goes directly to the start menu." That must have been a slip in concentration? There isn't a start menu now is there?

No , regrettably there isn't one included.

Luckily for MS , other people make them .

Classic Shell is popular - free - you can boot direct to desktop and have a start menu, very useful for getting around.

Welcome to Classic Shell

If you don't to have anything to do with the grotesque metro stuff , you can use ext7for8 instead. Windows 7 explorer for Windows 8

Thanks for the suggestions.

I just switched back to 7. So I'm going to mark the topic solved, as the problems aren't happening now.

If I do find out in some time that the main problems for me are solved, I might try 8 again, but so far it has cost me a lot of time with nothing results. (sigh)

These are the complete steps to make Windows 8 go directly to the desktop (disable SmartScreen when loggin in)
http://mauriciogracia.com/win8desktop
no regedit and no need to install software
We already have a tutorial showing how to do this: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/23783-desktop-boot-directy-using-scheduled-task.html

Steps 10 to 12 in your instructions are completely unnecessary.

Kari

In my case those steps were necessary and that is why I include them

Those steps 10 to 12 in your instructions are absolutely totally completely unnecessary. No need to argue about that. Just a member myself I cannot of course speak on behalf of site owners and mods but personally I think our members should not be given false information, or asked to do something that has non whatsoever real reason, a totally profoundly unnecessary task in this case. A valid and official Windows 8 do not need those steps.

Honestly, even the site where you "borrowed" those screenshots for steps 2 to 9 stops their tutorial there. For those last steps you had to do screenshots yourself because those you could not find on the Internet. Why? Because those steps are not needed.

Use several different computers during a day, so specs are irrelevant.
