Solved Copy/Paste in Windows Explorer Not Working

I can't use the native Windows 8 copy/paste. Copy works, but when I paste, I get the "waiting" cursor, then get dumped to the Metro screen. So far, the only way I can move or copy things is with CFiShellToys or TeraCopy, and I installed these only after the Native Windows 8 Copy/Paste kept failing.

I've already run SFC at the command prompt, and according the the results, all is well.

I checked the Event log, and here it is.

Faulting application name: explorer.exe, version: 6.2.9200.16384, time stamp: 0x50107dbc
Faulting module name: unknown, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000

I've tested hardware, memory, no faults.

S.C., i cannot help you with your problem, BUT testing memory (i guess memtext) is not 100 % waterproof.

I had 4 gb OCZ 1333 mhz memory (2 x 2 gb) that was tested for 72 hours in the shop and they said it was ok.

But having problems (hang-ups) with my system, i removed 1 stick and bye bye problems.

What you could do, if not already done, is remove your memory and let only 1 stick in, then see what happens.

Removed both 8 gig sticks, put one in. Booted up. Copy/paste failed. Powered down, swapped sticks. Same thing happened.

I could understand if this was a problem starting with Win7, but it's only been happening with Windows 8.

You could try a Reset and see whether it fixes the problem:http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2302-reset-windows-8-a.html

I read about that days ago, and it's not a viable option. That's like killing a mosquito using a sledgehammer. I am NOT going to reset/refresh Windows 8 and lose all the installed program. For that amount of work, I will just restore the Windows 7 system image I created 15 minutes before upgrading to Win8

I read that, too. Maybe I should make myself clearer.

I can copy and paste text in Notepad/Wordpad/Browser/Office.

BUT, when I try to copy or move any file from one directory/folder to another (select image file, copy, select folder, paste, Windows Explorer crashes) , that is when I get the Error of it tossing me to Metro, popping up the "Reporting Error to Microsoft".

BUT If I use a 3rd party program, like CFiShellToys, or TeraCopy, I can copy, move to my hearts desire.

I have full permissions on the file/drive/folder, it's not locked down, nor is it read only.

This is the error I just got again:

hé S-C,

i know this will be silly, but have you tried to take ownership?

And are you sure you have full access to the target folder?

Strange you are the only person having this problem, very strange

Hi Sandra

This looks like some annoying issue.

Is this happening on a laptop? Removing the ram doesn't seem a nice option. We'll have to think of something else.

Are all the updates installed?
A few weeks ago there where "huge" Windows updates released for improving performance and stability.
Most of those are showed here:
http://www.eightforums.com/virtualization/13168-im-done-windows-8-a.html#post142662

I also recommend to look at Sony for newer drivers and BIOS'es (look at versions or release dates) that were released since you got the model:
Sony eSupport - Computers - Select Your Model

You'll have to specify the model number or the series there.

Good luck

You have done a great job of stating your problem and what you have done to overcome it. Below are some options "sanctioned" by MS on Win8 that might solve your problem under given conditions. However, they are not attractive given that each probably would involve substantial reinstallation, etc (except Automatic Repair--which I don't really think is your answer).

1. Refresh your PC—Attempts to solve system related problems without affecting your files. Installed programs will have to be reinstalled except those from the Windows Store. A list of uninstalled programs is provided. Settings will be changed back to defaults.

2. Reset your PC—Removes everything and reinstalls Win8 .

3. System Restore—Attempts to restores your system to an earlier time assuming at least one restore point has been created. Files will be undisturbed, but applications and updates installed after the restore point will be uninstalled

4. System Image Recovery—Attempts to recovers your system using a selected previously made image file

5. Automatic Repair—Attempts to make repairs needed to allow Win8 to startup properly

An option that I have not seen mentioned WRT Win8 is to do a repair install--which which under earlier Win versions might fix the system leaving everything else intact. You'd need to back up all data off your PC for safety, although repair installs have been very safe historically. While I don't know why a repair install wouldn't work on Win8, I have not tried the procedure on Win8 nor have heard of anyone using it on Win8. To do a repair install, run the Win8 installer from within Windows on your machine. Choose the upgrade option (i.e., obviously, don't do a clean install). Of course, you must accept compete responsibility for trying this procedure. As indicated, I am not completely sure what will happen or if the procedure can even be applied. You also could try upgrading 8 to 8, so to speak, after starting to your DVD (presumably you have one).

Edit: I see you have posted the following: "That's like killing a mosquito using a sledgehammer. I am NOT going to reset/refresh Windows 8 and lose all the installed program." That's what I was thinking when I mentioned the options besides repair install.

My system specs are listed here: Sony Vaio E Series Laptop

Specific model is SVE15118FG.

Bios fully updated, all drivers current and updated. All Win 8 updates successfully installed. Have already contacted Sony, and they say "No idea".

It's not laziness, but the days of time wasted having to deactivate, uninstall, reinstall to fix this issue with Win 8 by refreshing/resetting.. I would be better off just restoring the Windows 7 system image I finished minutes before upgrading to Windows 8.

Also, before it's dusted off as "Upgrading instead of clean install", the computer was sold with the Win 8 upgrade option, as in fully compatible (or as close as fully compatible a computer can be regarding software) The only driver issue I had was graphics driver, and even that I ended up solving.

I'll try Windows Repair, but I don't know what it will 'fix' as SFC, malware check, virus check, and about a half dozen other fixes I've tried before posting about this will do.
