Downloading - Invalid/Corrupt Signature.

So, I've just bought a new laptop for university work and it came with Windows 8 pre-installed.

First thing I did when I booted the laptop up was install Microsoft Word and Norton Security, all fine so far!

And then it comes to downloading iTunes, latest Adobe Flashplayer/PDF reader etc and everytime it will get close to finishing. Around 98% or so, before stopping and saying 'The file download was interrupted'. So I press resume download and it comes up with another error message of 'The signature is invalid or corrupt'. I literally can't download a thing?

Also, I can't play youtube videos either. All I get is the 'buffering' circle, a black screen and a greyed out play button!

So, all in all, buying this laptop serves no purpose at all as I cant read the any PDF's for my university work, and can't surf youtube to procrastinate!

Any tips, hints or tricks?

-Matt.

Don't install the Flash Player. Microsoft is now supplying the flash player updates as part of Windows Update. Installing Adobe's flash player will cause problems.

I had similar problems with Adobe Reader XI on Windows 7. Their servers are overloaded with the recent release of Acrobat XI I think.

Are you now able to download iTunes, for example? I am confused by the earlier posts on this thread and am hoping for some clarification.

Nope, I'm still at square one. Been researching the internet but can't find anything relating to my problem.

I went on the Windows 8 website, and it had some videos that were introducing the new OS. I thought i'd give them a try to see if theres anything really simple im missing. Anyway, even those videos fail to work. I'll press play and nothing will happen. For a brand new laptop with a brand new OS it's really not good enough.

For the downloading front, I'm unable to download anything that's without a disc. All the programs I've tried, get to 98-99% and stop with the 'the download was interrupted' message. On pressing resume, I get another error message saying 'the programs signature is invalid or corrupt'.

I tested my installation; it works fine on uTube. On this issue, I found the following (here):

"Most videos on YouTube are streamed through Adobe Flash player.

...................I left out instructions here for updating to the latest version of flash.......................................

If the instructions above don't resolve the issue, please also try the following:

  1. Temporarily disable popup blocking software installed on your computer to test.
  2. Allow YouTube.com as a trusted site in your Firewall software.
  3. Ensure other applications like Quicktime, iTunes, Real Player, or Windows Media Player aren't set as the default streaming application, as this might affect the video player.
  4. Make sure your computer is set up properly for Flash by checking out Adobe's Advanced Troubleshooter here.

If you continue having difficulty viewing videos...

Maybe one of these suggestions will help you. Hope so. Note that Norton might be the problem on both counts since, for example, you might not have had the download problem until after installing Norton. Can you turn Norton completely off to test? I think not, but did you download Norton?

Yeah, i found that information on youtubes website but found that none of it actually worked for me. Thanks for looking though.

I downloaded norton through disc, first thing i did after i booted the laptop up. Im going to go to PC world this afternoon and check out what they have to say. I'll keep you posted if they find the actual problem.

I take it you mean you installed Norton via disk? Have you tried disabling Norton to see if you can download or play uTubes. For safety, you could turn Windows Defender on and disable Norton through the control panel--system and Security settings (or whatever). Why did I say "whatever?" Well, first I was on a Mac when I made the post and couldn't remember exactly where to find the Defender turn on. But, now, go here for the latest thrilling episode.

OK, now I think I know what to tell you to try--not that I am sure it will work. Turn Norton off--at least scanning. Hopefully, doing so will result automatically in Windows Defender starting up. Then, you can see if you can download and view uTube videos securely. If you can't, then I don't think interference from Norton is the problem.

To put things back the way they were, enable Norton again and restart. After perhaps a brief elapse of time, you should be able to turn Windows Defender off in Action Center. For related details, go here. Note that Defender might turn itself off once Norton is reactivated.

Hey Matt
Here is a workaround......

So I had the same problem , I was downloading Win 8 printer drivers & Software from the HP site.
It would either fail like yours did during download or It would download and show this message during install ''The signature is invalid or corrupt'' (Tried a couple different downloads same issue)
What I did was go to my XP machine , Download the files & extracted them onto my USB stick. Then plugged the stick into the win 8 machine & installed.
And it worked great.

ps
This was the first programs/drivers pack I installed before installing any other program. There has to be some setting that can be disabled in these scenario's as other downloads after worked fine like messenger and POI Loader.
Thanks

Hey guys just registered as i have encountered exact same problem ! I know it may be abit late but heres how i solved. Do not install norton , i had to uninstall it. This is for windows 8 as windows 8 has windows defender and is completley free forever. Once norton is uninstalled windows defender will pop up, activate and update this and then youcan download whatever you like.

Hope this becomes useful to others

Jack
