Solved Windows won't download after purchase

My son bought the Windows 8 upgrade on offer £24.99 from MS. But it will not download no matter what option he selects - install now, create media or install from desktop later.
Just keeps failing saying there is an error and try later.
Any ideas?

Thanks Shawn. Yes, he has the product key, but it's at Step 6) that the problem lies. No matter what he selects, there is an error almost immediately.
Error says 'Sorry, something happened and we couldn't finish creating the ISO. Restart setup and try again'. Which of course, we've tried a zillion times!

OK, we solved the problem, prompted by your tutorial.
We deleted the Appdata/Local/Microsoft/Websetup folder, redownloaded the setup file from your link, and voila - it is now downloading.

Our happiness was short lived. After the download (and burn to DVD) went OK, the install didn't. It does all the pre-checks, and immediately after it starts the install, it fails with 'Windows 8 Install failed' message.
I feel like giving up!
I did a SFC /scannow in a Admin command prompt, disabled all startup options, checked the drive, but no matter what I do it's the same.
My install went without a hitch. Don't know what is happening on this other PC.
Any ideas?

You might see if doing a clean install with your Windows 8 upgrade may work better.

Before you do, you should create a system image to a separate HDD to be able to do a system image recovery back to Windows 7 if needed, and/or backup anything that you do not want to lose.

Thanks again. He doesn't have access to another HDD on his PC. I did notice that there is only about 30Gb free on his drive. That couldn't be the problem could it?

30GB of free space should be plenty to work with during an installation.

Did he uninstall any 3rd party AV or firewall program before starting the upgrade installation? They can sometimes interfere with the installation causing it to fail.

I just realised that I didn't reply! Sorry.
Well, after uninstalling a whole load of programs, he ended up with around 400Gb of free space and the install went fine after that.
Now, I have no idea what specific event made the difference, so I can't be much help to anyone who may have the same problem, but at least there is a solution out there somewhere!
