Win 8 Questions

I have a few questions regarding some functionality that I seemed to have lost from upgrading from Win 7.

On "My Pictures" I no longer have the option to rename, cut, copy or any option I previously had. This is frustrating and I'm not sure what I may have set wrong that I can no longer do that. If that's just how it is I don't see how this an upgrade so I'm looking for some guidance regarding that. All right clicking does is select the image, but I cannot find any of the previous options for the life of me and I would love to organize my photos as I want. Also, on videos there is no longer a pause feature etc, it just plays. Is that right?

Second, I understand we are supposed to have the ability to move the tiles as we want, but is there an option to make it a non-rubrics cube? To be able to move one thing without it jacking with another? I've spent a lot of time on Google, but no dice.

Third, if I don't take to Win 8, since I upgraded via download is there a safe way to revert back to 7 or do I have to backup all my personal stuff, photos etc and since I don't seem to have that option to transfer, burn to a disc that will be a chore or is there an option that I can simply access that will restore my OS to Win 7?

Thanks in Advance

First of all, welcome to the forums, arbruehl :)

What do you mean by "my pictures"? Do you mean the picture library? Library>Pictures ? If that's what you mean, all the functions are there, you aren't probably doing things the right way.

If you mean: c:>Users>username>My Pictures
Here also, all the functions are there. You aren't doing things as you should.

By the way, just letting you know, if you aren't aware already:

Ctrl+c = copy
Ctrl+x = cut
Ctrl+v = paste

If you select a file and press: F2 (function key 2) = rename

Video (app) player has a BIG pause button. You can seek to a particular part of the video and pause.

Second, I understand we are supposed to have the ability to move the tiles as we want, but is there an option to make it a non-rubrics cube? To be able to move one thing without it jacking with another? I've spent a lot of time on Google, but no dice.
No, you can't resize the tiles. But in case of metro tiles (only) you have the option of making it either a square or rectangle.

You have to back up your data. You have to make a system back up image (mirror image of your current Windows 7 installation). If you have already installed Windows 8 without making a backup image of your W7, I'm not sure if there is a way you can safely revert back (of course, I mean, you can't have your previous settings, you can certainly reinstall a fresh Windows 7 if you have the W7 installation disc)

Hope I could help. :)

Apologize, on Metro it is listed as "Photos", but yes I meant my personal library. However, after posting this I noticed if I go to Administrative Tools it has a layout like Win 7 that you can access your stuff including "My pictures" where you can do the things I can't do by accessing the photos tile. I guess the photos tile is basically just an extension of "my pictures" that doesn't leave room for much other than viewing where as going the other route I figured out is how you would need to for edits (re-naming folders etc) I'm usually pretty PC savvy and can figure things out, but Win 8 for whatever reason is bringing out my inner idiot.

I knew about the hot-keys, work with them daily, I was just getting confused with the photo tile and the lack of options versus the other way I figured out. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough sense to make a backup pre-Win 8, so I'd have to create a separate backup, reinstall and go from there, but I think I'll just continue to try and adjust to 8 and hope Microsoft does something about that whole tile organizing mess. Not that it's terrible, but I liked being able to move icons however I wanted without displacing another, but that's just me nitpicking. Otherwise, it's coming together. 8 seems like a move in the right direction, but definitely has a higher learning curve then I anticipated.

Thanks for the reply and info Arpan

Oh ... I think I see what you're talking about. If my guess is correct you're using the Metro picture viewer.

No, you can't cut and paste pictures or move them around up there. To do that go back to the desktop and open a File Explorer like you would have done in Win7 and you'll be able to do everything you were previously doing. The Metro-based photo viewer is primarily for viewing your photos, it is not a file system utility. There's nothing wrong with your system, you're just trying to use the Metro section in a way it wasn't designed. You'll find the desktop just as functional as before.

If you want an App to manipulate your pictures with there are a few in the Store now that allows you to rename, rotate etc.

You are welcome :D

I feel that the Photo app is for simple viewing of your pictures. Windows explorer is the way to organize your stuff.

It happens to all of us, no worries ;)
