I installed on a laptop and this happened, just get the juggling balls. I have Bitlocker on it, and that appears to be corrupted too. I couldn't ever login so I wasn't able to turn off hibernate yet, but that'll be the first thing I do this weekend for sure when I reinstall on that laptop.

For me it would lock up on the cold boot but I could then press the reset button and it would boot up OK. Wash, rinse and repeat. ;)

I think microsoft really did a not very nice job making this new OS. I am switching the Windows 7 as soon as possible coz Win 8 is even worse than Vista!

Possible solution to Windows 8.1 Freezing on Boot

I´ve been working on a client´s laptop and he had this "Freezing" problem when starting Windows 8.1 from either hibernation or sleep.

I used ubuntu USB boot on 64GB USB to copy all his data off the disk to save it and reloaded windows 8.1, restored data and re-installed software.

Horror, same problem occured a few days later, but I managed to fix it after going through thousands of posts...

It is obviously a problem with windows hibernation file - my first issue was the disk was lockedandI could only access the windows disk from Ubuntu ro. By sheer chance, while booting back into windows 8, I changed my mind and held down the power key to force shutdown. I rebooted and it rebooted in to recovery mode, giving me "Windows did not shutdown properly etc" and gave me the WIndows recovery screen. I tried restore points etc but everything failed each time. What I did discover is that by booting up, waiting, cold booting and interupting I could always get back to the "windows did not start properly" - which allowed me to use the command prompt.

To unlock the disk, I found from the command prompt "shutdown /p" shuts down without locking the disk (I´m guessing it locks the disk for hibernation protection). Note it takes a minute or two to actually shutdown so be patient. (5 mins top)

Then using Ubuntu usb, I renamed (not deleted at this point just in case!) hiberfil.sys to hiberfil.xxx and pagefile.sys to pagefile.xxx - I rebooted and it worked!!!!!

I have now turned off hibernation and power button always turns off until microsoft fix the bug. I´m guessing that the hiberfil.sys or pagefile.sys get corrupted in someway. Windows 8 created a new hiberfil.sys and pagefile.sys and I deleted the two renamed files without issue. Anyway it worked for me! *** As a footnote, the computer rebooted to the last restore point that I had tried *** Not going to spend more time looking at this though :)
