Crashed after 1st use

HI Guy's
i upgraded my windows 7 machine with a ASUS p5Q motherboard to Win8 last week online.
i have used the system once with no problems. However tonight when i logged on i couldn't get the system to connect to the internet. After some looking around i noticed that updates were waiting and a restart was requested. In good faith therefore i initiated the update.

The system now wont restart and keeps cycling through different coloured black screens finally finishing on a blue screen with a SAD face on saying you have encountered a problem.
it states that video_TDR_failure is the reason. I have tried a restart with f9 held but it simply checks the disk and starts again.

clearly i now have 2 problems, the video issue and the network.

Can anyone help please?

Try tapping F8 during boot to get to the Advanced Boot Options Menu then select Last know configuration that worked. See if that helps.

you have to press shift + F8 with Windows 8 to get Recovery Option Menu and Command Prompt Boot

I have managed to re boot this way but still cannot connect to the internet. the system shows that i have a good connection to the network but when i launch ie i get nothing.
What is interesting is that the info tiles on the new desktop are showing the news and sport which is current so something is wrong. My network is live as i can connect with my imac through the same router

help pls
