Windows 8 Boots to Desktop - Not Start Screen

This is rather ironic. Most people complain about booting to the new Start page and want to boot the the Desktop. I would rather boot the new Start page but my new Asus Windows 8 computer boots to the start page initially but after about three seconds automatically goes to the desktop. Any ideas on what's going on?

Thanks,

I am guessing Asus has installed some software on your computer that after the timeout, in this case 3 s. the desktop is invoked. Did Asus provide you with a desktop start menu? How much crap ware was installed on it out of the box? Just trying to get an idea what MS partners are installing on new 8 installations.

Very little crap on the Asus and no Desktop Start Menu. It must be something I installed that is causing the problem. It booted to the Start Screen in the beginning. If I could figure out what I did I could help a lot of people who want to boot to the Desktop.

You may have something in the startup folder that is causing the desktop to come up, look here

C:\Users\Duane\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

yeah, I'm having startup program that dumps me to the desktop. when I boot, it shows the start screen and then it shows me the desktop. i'm not quite sure which program it is as all the programs I use are mainstays for me (stuff like Dropbox, Adobe CS5, etc.)

C:\Users\Duane\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

There was only one file in the Startup folder - Microsoft One-Note, which I removed and restarted. It still rolled over to the Desktop after a brief stop at the Start Screen.

Microsoft has gone to great lengths to prevent us from going directly to the Desktop and now we are unable to boot to the Start Screen. Go figure...

You can also open Task Manager and see other programs that are starting up at boot.

this isn't the best way to see what apps are launched at startup. open your task manager (ctrl+shift+esc). go to startup tab. and then see what's running.

if you figure out what's causing the desktop to come up, please share. we might use the same program. I'd definitely remove the program from booting with Windows to restore the start screen as default.

I've already posted tips to make the computer boot to desktop. It's very simple. Just copy C:\Users\(you)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX\Group1\Desktop.lnk

to

C:\Users\(you)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

This thread is not to how make Windows 8 boot to the desktop. It's how to restore the default boot to the start screen.

On one of my computers, for some reason, something is causing it to go to desktop when I don't want that behavior. I don't want to see the desktop unless I have to. I don't know what startup program is causing this problem.

I was having the same trouble, but mine is a self built comp that was upgraded from Windows 7. On my system it was a previous version of Logitech Setpoint that was causing the behavior. New version is 6.5.

I have noticed that two people with the same problem have found that it was caused by Logitech Setpoint software. I have a Logitech keyboard but the Setpoint software is not installed. I don't see how the keyboard could cause the problem?

I had to refresh my computer because the Wi-Fi quit working (what a bummer, it erases all the installed apps). Anyway, when I booted up I did not have the problem of rolling over to the Desktop. I did not install any software BUT some Windows Updates loaded and when the computer restarted it rolled over to the Desktop. It seems that Microsoft is the culprit.

Is your logitech keyboard illuminated? That is the keyboard I have.

No, mine is about five years old and I don't have the Setpoint software installed.

So is the Setpoint software a driver for the logitech stuff or just a configuration program?

Yes I know its logitech software, but if its installing an updated driver, then the new driver might be fixing the problem.
