Dual boot of Windows 7 and Windows 8 (using the Upgrade offer)

So if my system completely dies tomorrow after let's say a short circuit and I have bought the OEM and the System Builder which one can I use to build another computer.

So what happens if there's nothing close to my motherboard available and I have to buy the latest one with the latest chipset, and all my peripherals died as well, because of the short circuit., and the only thing that is any good is the case, even the PSU is burnt out.

An OEM copy is permanently tied to the motherboard of the computer it was first activated on, and cannot be used to activate on a different computer or motherboard. It can only be activated on that exact same motherboard it was first activated on. That's why it's so much cheaper. Sometimes you may be able to what Simon (SIW2) posted below though.

A retail system builder or upgrade copy will let you activate it on any computer you like as long as it's only activated on one computer and uninstalled on any other at that time.

Dual boot of Windows 7 and Windows 8 (using the Upgrade offer) - this post was written under the following thread ...

but has been moved (by an administrator, I presume) to the general discussion pages.

Could you please comment on my situation.
I have a laptop with Win XP Pro (SP3) installed - I have the original CD (which was SP2) and licence - but it is dying and soon will be dead - Because of that I have bought a new laptop with Win 7 HP installed and eligibility for the Win 8 Pro upgrade offer. Can I do a dual-boot of Win 7 HP (already installed) and use the upgrade offer to put Win 8 in a second primary partition, using the Win XP license code for the latter (providing I discontinue use of the Win XP machine - which is nearly dead anyway)?

Does my second partition need to have an OS on it already, for the Win 8 upgrade to work, or will it install on a clean partition?

I like some of the features of Win 8, but am not sure about other features, and want to test Win 8 alongside Win 7 before I commit to one or the other. I saw above that one could create a system image of the Win 7 partition to test Win 8 and then revert back again without doing a dual boot, but I would prefer to keep using Win 7 for normal use, while I test Win 8 using the dual boot option in my spare time.

You can do what you want, install Windows 8 on a second partition. However, you will be violating the EULA since the upgrade is to replace Windows 7.

Alternately, if you have an activated OS on that second partition, say Windows XP, it would seem you are not violating the EULA because you are upgrading from an installed OS.

I worked my up from a virtual machine, to a slow 32-bit celeron and now two monitors on my XPS8100. Works great!
