I just installed Wndows 8 Pro, and...

1) Yes, I installed it on top of the Windows 8 free Preview Edition, and it works fine. You do not need to install it on top of XP, Vista, or 7.

2) I easily installed a Start button on the classic desktop. Reports that MS would make that impossible are not true.

3) No gadgets! And it won't let you install them, nor will it let you install Yahoo Widgets. I quickly found a free program and I'm happily running gadgets.

4) I can't find the anti-virus program.

5) As with the preview version, I turn off the password, and it keeps turning itself back on.

6) Internet Explorer 10 works great.

#2 - Would you please share what you did to get your start button? I'm using "Classic Shell", but would rather not have to install anything if there is a way to do it through the OS.

#4 - Windows Defender (look in control panel) has replaced MS security essentials. It even looks like MSE when launched.

#6 - IE 10 seems ok. There are some quirks I'm trying to get used to, and some sites I go to have a few issues with it.

I typed download Start Button into Google. The one I chose was Classic Shell, but in the past I have used the Vista Start Button and it works fine.

Thank you. I found Windows Defender and IT HAD NOT BEEN UPDATED IN 165 DAYS! I received no warning abut this, but I easily updated it.

I'm a diehard Firefox fan, and I consider Explorer 10 to be better.

I have twice downloaded the free e-book, Windows 8 for Dummies, and I can't find it in documents, downloads, or through Search. It is a .pdf file, and I have installed Adobe Reader, but it doesn't list it. Any suggestions?

I believe Gadgets have been removed because they presented a nasty security flaw. Guess they figured that removing them was easier than fixing the problem. Plus with the drain on ram, I guess they figured they weren't worth it. At any rate, third party programs save the day.

I don't know why people would think that - it does show that MS has a serious PR problem if people believe they would do that.

MS have deliberately made it impossible to reconstitute/resurrect Windows own start menu.

Much as they would like to, they dare not prevent a popular 3rd party program like Classic Shell from working. There would be an uproar if they

There is no need to reconstruct the Windows start menu, because it's the Start Screen. Serves the same purpose and function.

But it also rubs many people the wrong way. Just because it makes you the happiest tech guy on the planet, doesn't make it right or the best for everyone. I think an entire screen dedicated to start is just silly. But then again, I never used my smartphone or tablet and said,."boy it's too bad my desktop cannot work similar to this"

Downloading anything in Windows 8 behaves exactly like it does on Windows 7, you must have it going to some path that you are not aware of. Use the desktop version of IE10 and rather than clicking just SAVE use the drop down and choose Save As and choose your download directory. This should make that the default location and in turn IE10 Metro will have the same location.

Since I did a clean install, I lost all of my programs. But after some searching, I found [SUP]
FREE Great Programs for Windows 7 [2] - Windows 7 Forums

Posted by Brink (Everyone's favorite moderator) the post contains the best list of free Windows 7 programs I have ever found. It is difficult to locate Windows 8 programs, but anything that runs well on Windows 7 will run well on 8.

I don't believe that is correct. In Windows 7 the "All Programs" part of the Start menu is basically all of the programs you have installed that are registered in the Registry. Considering all the ancillary programs that install along with many major programs the total number could be 100 - 200 or more. That corresponds to the Windows 8 programs listed in the All Apps screen not the fewer programs shown on the Start Screen.

The hierarchical organization of the Windows 7 All Programs menu makes it relatively easy to quickly find the one program you are looking for. On the Windows 8 All Apps screen its too can take a lot of scrolling with mouse and eyes to find what you want. If all those programs were on the Start screen you could be scrolling for a long time to find the program with all those big tiles in the limited number of rows provided.

Therefore, IMHO, the Windows 8 Start screen is not equivalent to the Windows 7 Start menu considering the very convenient All Programs part of that menu.

Forgive me for stepping in here

On the Windows 8 All Apps screen its too can take a lot of scrolling with mouse and eyes to find what you want.

No scrolling is required at all. Semantic zooming eliminates the need to scroll in apps area.

The hierarchical organization of the Windows 7 All Programs menu makes it relatively easy to quickly find the one program you are looking for.

Personal Preference: > I am thrilled at the elimination of nested menus in Windows 8

The whole design was based on "touch first" with mouse and keyboard full functionality included.

It's just a relief, for this user, to not have to deal with the something like this anymore.

I think Microsoft screwed up on taking that off the desktop.

I do not know where you get the idea that MS has removed the turnoff, restart etc... functions from the desktop. They are easily available from charms.

Also, I would say that running 3rd party registry optimizers in Windows 8 might not be a good idea.
