The tool won't show up if there are no devices to eject.

Have you right clicked on it? What does it show?

There are devices which you may not realize are considered removable, such as hot-swap hard drives.

I don't get it. You want to remove something from a hidden summary box that you cannot see.

On my laptop (and on Windows 7) the eject icon would dissapper once there's nothing left to eject.

On this computer it stays there.

update
I clicked the link, and one of the devices was a USB storage device.
I didn't have any connected (except maybe my built in card reader), so I removed that and now the icon disappeared for the taskbar.

If your laptop has an SD card reader in it, even with no card in the drive, it can cause the tool to remain. The reasons is that many of those readers are actually connected to the USB bus internally, and even though no drive is mounted, the device itself is mounted.

Yes, I'm experiencing this exact same problem too.
It's annoying having the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon taking up taskbar space. So the only way hide it is with "Customise Notification Icons" which means I'm constantly setting notification properties for every application that opens.

The card reader is physically empty and so is its drive in "My Computer". However, setting Explorer to 'Hide empty drives in the Computer folder' (from the View options) doesn't hide/remove the drive from showing - so "Safely Remove Hardware" icons keeps showing.
Changing the device policies from 'Better performance' to 'Quick removal' made no difference.

It's very annoying (to me at least!) that Win8 is forcing this device to be displayed even though it's not in use!

Also, this problem doesn't occur in Win7.

In my case I see it, but it lists my actual hard drives as ejectable!

I always thought it was a side effect of going to AHCI mode in my BIOS or because I have an extra PCIe SATA card (though the drives its shows are also on the MB ports). Granted I am using an nForce 730i chipset MB (The Geforce 9300 boards). It also did this in Windows 7. I don't remember it doing this when I was IDE mode.

On my other Win7 box, I have a 256GB SSD on a Z77 MB and don't see it, even though its in AHCI mode.

Check your BIOS. On my mobo I can set all of my SATA drives to be hot-swappable (which is disabled due to obvious reasons)

You could disable the reader in device manager, and then re-enable if you need it. You just have to remember that you disabled it should you decide to want to use it.

Yes, it has to do with AHCI, but not all AHCI drives will do this. It's because the drives are marked as "Hot Swappable". If you're going to take a drive out (such as if you have a drive carrier) while the computer is running, you still need to "safely remove hardware" on it, even though it's a SATA drive. Also, remember there is eSATA and the computer doesn't know an eSATA drive from a normal SATA drive (there is no hardware mechanism to indicate it). There should be a way to turn off the Hot Swap feature, it might be in your BIOS.

Hm interesting!
I right-clicked the empty drive and selected 'Eject' and it removed the drive icon and the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon too!
It also removed the integrated USB hub device (which can't be re-enabled until the device is physically re-plugged) :l

I guess I could make a .bat to enable/disable the card reader in Device Manager and use it only when needed. meh.

Odd... it dismounted the entire drive and you can't use it now?

Heh yea. It put the card reader (+USB hub) into a dismount state. I had to reconnect it before it would work again. How odd.
I wonder if there's a way to tell/trick Win8 into thinking a device is internal and cannot be unmounted/removed..?
Gonna have a look at the USB settings in the registry with USBDeview

For me this issue was totally resolved with Windows 7 when Marvell brought out their new controller drivers (Marvell SATA Controller Driver, 1.2.0.1027, 1.31MB, 2012/08/22). However under Windows 8 (tried those drivers without luck) it has gone back to this...

I have three SSD drives fitted but only the one fitted to the Marvell controller shows it as a SCSI type of drive and also it is able to be "ejected".

You can see how the Samsung SSD is being shown under the Intel and then under the Marvell controller...

...the solution could be when Marvell update their drivers again

Yeah it came back on reboot. Hopefully a future update will fix it.
