Win 8, My thoughts and start menu regedit config?

I have just registered to search the forum for a slight issue I am having with this final build of Win8 Pro (64bit).
I tested the pre-releases a while back and like the idea that you could put some sort of start menu back by changing a registry entry. However, in this final build the setting doesn't seem to work.. Have they totally disabled the start (orb) in desktop view?

    In general,

W8 installed fine on my HP 2560p Elitebook laptop but I had to tinker about a bit with Windows 7 drivers to get some things to work. Main issue was that the hard drive in my expansion bay would not be seen but a Windows update seemed to fix this.. only outstanding issue I have is that my inbuild 3G WWAN card only worked once but I have not really spent time looking at this yet. It currently says no service.

Metro? not ideal for a non-touchscreen desktop but works fine. It would have been nice to have a option on setup to choose between a touchscreen or none touch screen and then if you would like to use Metro or desktop/Start Menu.
I'm having to change my workflow to use Metro which is not a big thing but I do not generally like desktop items so Im having to place shortcuts all over my desktop and pin stuff to the taskbar in desktop mode.. again, A start menu within desktop mode is more my thing.

OS: Seems to runs smoothly on my computer and seems faster than Win7.

Drivers: Be nice if HP release full driver collection for Win 8, at the moment I am having to use Win7 drivers.

Programs: Main program I am having issues with is VM Workstation, it installs but VMs cant run.. I am hoping VMware will address this issue.

I would like SP1 to re-introduce the start menu/orb and give the option to boot to desktop and turn off metro UI.

    Windows 8.1 Pro

The Start menu is not coming back.

VMware requires an upgrade to Workstation 9 to support Windows 8. Since you have Windows 8 Pro, however, it has virtual machine software built in. It's called Client Hyper-V.

You need to turn it on though. Open the start menu, then type Features, and then click the Settings category under the search box. Choose Turn Windows Features On and Off (this is also accessible from Control Panel). Tick the checkmark next to Client Hyper-V and hit ok and let it install. You will have to reboot.

You also need to make sure Virtualization is turned on in your BIOS (and that your computer supports hardware virtualization, most recent computers do).

    There's a nice walkthrough here:
