i have upgraded my laptop to windows 8 everything works fine when it is on but when i try to shut down or sleep it just has a black sceen and does not turn off or sleep and it becomes unresponsive so have to hold down the power button to reboot it.

also whenever windows needs restarting it freezes on the restarting screen so again have to reboot by holding down power :cry::(

Run your task manager to see if there is anything interfering with the shut down process.
Look at apps. How many running apps? CPU activity?

Tried that will not let me do it keeps coming up 'insert media' 'Some files are missing. Your Windows installation or recovery media will provide these files

Problem is don't have either of these since downloaded it from MS upgrade assistant and ordered backup disc but need to wait for it to come

Hmmmm, I don't have a backup disc and worked for me.

Settings>Check PC Settings>General>Remove everything and reinstall Windows

Is that what you did?

It seems that Upgrades are still awfully problematic. Always best to do a clean install. However, if you're having problems there might be a different problem. Some older computers have buggy bios's (even sometimes newer ones). You should go out to your hardware vendors site and download and flash the latest bios.
