Version differences

I'm doing research for our company because our software is not working properly on a Win8 environment. It uses dotnet quite a bit for the front end and the licensing software we use. Our first hurdle was .Net Framework 4.0 with the licensing program but we have it working on Win 8 professional 64-bit v.9200. But on the Business Enterprise Edition (915440) refuses to let our license activate. I have not been able to track down if there are any substantial differences between the enterprise and pro versions, but apparently there has to be because our licensing program works fine on the 64-bit Pro version. If nothing else, has anyone found any OS differences in these two?

My guess is it has to be .Net related, because our code is 100% reliant on that to activate our user's software. Any help would be very appreciated! We are stuck.

This problem is specific to whatever licensing system you are using. It sounds like it may be related to ActiveX or COM objects, which are specific to 32 bit and 64 bit systems.

What licensing system are you using?

It's definitely XHEO related (our license software). But the weird thing is 9200 and the 915440 builds of Win8 are both x64 versions. That's why we're baffled. And conveniently XHEO has no clue how to help nor do they seem willing, unfortunately for us.

What are you referring to? 915540? All released versions of Windows 8 are build 9200.

The developer ISO that was released on 8/15 was called en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440

Are you sure that that version is also 9200?

That's not the build number, that's the SKU (or product ID). It's just what identifies what edition it is. They are all build 9200, they just have different configuration options.

All versions of Windows are more or less identical, depending on which key you enter, you get different configurations. So there should be no technical difference between the versions, unless the software itself does something different based on edition. For instance, some software won't install on a specific version for licensing reasons (you have to pay for a more expensive license).

Thanks for the input. I was not aware that all the developer releases were the same as what is being launched later this week (9200). I actually found a contact through our company in Microsoft so hopefully they can shed a bit more light on this. There's definitely something different between the Windows 8 basic and x64 Pro in the .Net. We just have to find out what.

What do you mean by Developer releases? You mean MSDN? Those are not "Developer releases", they're RTM releases, you just get to download them as an ISO through MSDN. They're the same as the retail and OEM versions.

No, there is no difference. .NET is the same regardless of what edition you use. There are, however, different "profiles" that can be installed. The Client Profile only contains the components you would use on a desktop, for instance. The Full Profile has everything (including server assemblies).
