Hi,

Recently I noticed when I go to use the search in Windows 8 it crashes after a few letters are typed and goes back to the start screen. Does anybody have any idea how I can fix this?

No help here, but as of this morning I noticed the exact same behaviour. Just started to investigate. If I come up with a solution, Will let you know.

Could you try updating the sound card driver and see whether it helps. It could be something to do with some third party programs.

Why would updating a sound card driver help? So far I have rebuilt the search index but still the same problem. AFAIK nothing was changed on the system before this started happening.

Also make sure to check your Index settings. If it is not showing complete, that could cause crashes. It is under control panel.

I have checked the index settings, all good. Run the scan disk three times, still no change. Getting tempted to reinstall, this is more than annoying.

that is not a bad idea my friend, but make sure your win8 ISO is all in the clear. is it safe to assume you tried repair by booting from a usb or a dvd?

the same is happening to me in 2 different computers. I truly believe that the reason for this is a update made by Microsoft Update don't know for sure which but i made a fresh install on one my computers and tonight I'm going to try and figure it out.

Just verify and KB2756872 is the responsible update that creates this problem. I installed it and search start crashing again. I removed that update and search started working perfectly once more.

Yep.. Just uninstalled the update and the search is working again now. Should this be reported somewhere?

My Computer

I did have them all installed. But upon finding out KB2756872 was the cause of the problem I have uninstalled it until I can find a fix.

EDIT: Also I think with this uninstalled it may stop other updates installing, giving an error. I saw somebody else who had a driver issue after the update and the only way was to revert. Now he is getting errors on later updates.

Yes everything is working ok my end also, but it's a shame as that update contained performance improvements?? I'm going to put 7 back on this machine I think, until 8 SP1.

Same problem for me, even if I unistalled that update, the problem is still there. When I try to search, it crashes both explorer.exe and WerFault.exe with a "memory can't be written" error. Any suggestions?

KB2756872 ... This update screwed me up too. My search charm crashes and the "all apps" button crashes. I uninstalled this update and everything is back to normal. Has any one discovered why this is happening?
