I actually don't feel that the Aero (such as glass) is too much. I personally like it.

However, if there is one thing MS should consider when they make W8 is that some people really like to customize. I agree that there should be more base options to change. Default font (such as for dialog boxes, start menu, etc) should be changeable, things like taskbar effects (such as solid color, no glass, box, smooth, etc), how the menus open (linux can make then catch fire to close ) and close, how the menus look, taskbar positions, start orbs (or boxes, or pictures, etc), log in screen.

This would make those who like customization happier, and give more options to those who don't like default. With any luck, this would incorporate the "basic" feel.

I feel windows, generally speaking, lets you customize one heck of a bit. Its like an open book. Also, its hard to understand why people want to make so many cosmetic changes. Its just the skins that change, not the core OS.

Also, if one were to change win7 to XP, it doesnt make much sense to have bought win7 in the first place.

I am not one to customize (the OS anyways, you should see my case!), but I feel that it should be an option.

And compared to Linux, Windows is a CLOSED book.

Thats comparing apples and oranges, Lordybob!

If Linux was so great (apart from being free), many of us would have jumped ship a long time back. The fact we are here (and on SF!) speaks for itself.

I think we all want an OS that'll do all the things windows lets us do, be free and open like Linux and virus-free and hassle-free like Mac. So hopefully win8 will be the one.

Somehow I don't think the free part will be in the equation Bill

In this case, I think it applies. They are both operating systems, so therefore they can both be compared. You said Windows can be customized a lot, and it's true. But when you look at Linux, Windows just has very few options (at least built in ones, 3rd party programs help a little).
Thought with Linux, you can also change the core OS to whatever you want.

The big reason the switch has not been made to Linux is business. Most apps are written for Windows because that is what most people (and businesses) use. If all you are doing is email, web browsing, watching videos online, then Linux (such as Ubuntu) would be a MUCH BETTER choice than Windows. If you game, well... That is the big reason I have not switched.

Come to think of it, someone could make a Linux flavour look similar to windows classic....

I really like aero but i hate how aero basic looks (to me basic looks worse then XP). I think instead aero basic Microsoft should make something similer to the XP Royale theme .

I like the aero concept; but I do not care for most of MS's aero themes. I am definitely am NOT looking for an XP look alike. I just prefer a more utilitarian and functional look. However, I realize that MS is not trying to appeal to my generation; nor should they be.

I don't see a reason to NOT appeal to them as well. It would help keep sales.

That is why I keep saying there should be the option for that look as well, regardless of how many actually use it. It is not like it is hard to put in another basic theme.
