Mouse over the Windows flag, click on "Search" type MSconfig in the search box and click to search. Click on MSconfig and in the new window on the Services tab, click to put a tick in the box "Hide all Microsoft services" and then on "disable all" then click on apply, then OK. Finaly in the new window on restart and see if this fixes your problem

As your problem is intermittent you may have to restart a few times to see if the above helps.
If it helps you can then enable the services one at a time to find the culprit.
To get back to a normal boot. "after the step Hide all Microsoft services" just simply select enable all or put a tick back in each box and restart the PC
