W8 x-86 blazingly fast -- W8 x-64 -- a bit sluggish
Hi all
I've tried out BOTH versions of W8 on a fairly modest laptop with 4 GB RAM -- my observations are that W8 x-86 beats W7 hands down for boot speed and performance but W8 x-64 (the 64 bit version) still isn't quite ready for prime time yet --it seems a lot more sluggish and a few programs won't work on it when they work just fine on W8 x-86 --- such as VMware workstation rel 8 / VMware player rel 4 and Equis Metastock v 11.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and Windows 8 Consumer Preview
I'm running the x64 on my desktop as my main OS now because ever since I put the Dev Preview of Windows 8 on it, I've seen nothing but massive performance gains. I've had no compatibility issues, or anything. So, for me personally unless Microsoft downgrades the OS from here (which they certainly will do the opposite...) upgrading to it when the full version is released will be well worth it, especially if I also buy an SSD.

Win 7; windows 8 developer; xp 32
Insanity: boot speed x64 developer preview with build. Not to mention install time. Corsair f80 boot drive. Did my research and had proper Intel driver. Nvidia 8800 video driver on hand.
Set paging few to separate partion. Now if only. international keyboards work seamlessly with 8. Minor install issues with programs. No problem after turning on. Net 3.5

Windows 8, x64, DP8102 - Win7 Ultimate x64, Dual Boot
Yeah, I can remeber when Win7 was blazingly fast (still faster than XP - I skipped Vista) and as I install more and more programs on Win8 ... I see a similarity to Win7 performance.
Hi all
Most of the probs with X-64 edition now fixed
Still can't make metastock run (run it now on a VM)
VMware is fine -- upgrade to workstation 8 or vmplayer rel 4. Don't forget to add your user to the __VMWARE__ group (2 underscores each side) on X-64 or you will only be able to run VMware as an administrator.
Seems some of the Windows updates have fixed the x-64 performance.
I've posted in a separate post -- can't do anything sensible with Printer sharing when a USB printer is attached to the W8 machine -- got round the problem by attaching the printer to a VM (W2K3 server Virtual Machine) running on the HOST W8 system --then I could share the printer with remote laptops. There doesn't seem to be a specific way to share / enter the share name of a printer on W8 -- see other post.
