DirectDraw games performance

Dunno if this was asked before, but I searched and found nothing.

I am having issues with games that seem to be DirectDraw based. There are two main things I noticed:

Performance - Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive - the game works awfully slow. My machine may not be the best there is, its a Q6600 with GTS 450, but c'mon, this is an old game.

Fonts - I really wanted to play Gangsters and Atlantis 3, but the fonts are not rendered for some reason. I tried comparing the fonts in windows 7 (luckily saved the old windows 7 dir) but no fonts seem to be missing. I've read that they scrapped Cleartype, but surely those games don't use it?

Tried all the compatibility settings. Any ideas?

Ps.

Just a reference.....

WIndows 8 hasn't released completely to the market yet, i suggest you to wait until Microsoft publishes more drivers, plugins, etc..

    It's a gaming PC, so it's heavily modified :D
DirectDraw...

You need to install the full DX9 package (about 90mb) since games still use it.
Win8 only has support for DX10 and 11.

Also check to see if you need c++ redistributables (2008, 2010) + updated graphics drivers and Intel chipset drivers (the system generic devices often need update, but the best part is: people usually never update these).

For cleartype: yes we have it!

here are the details:

You can also do what VIIB says and wait until more people use 8 and when more support is available. But I'll certainly try all the options available at the moment.

Hope this helps.

@Hapochi, ClearType maybe is only for improving text resolution and brightness. I don't think it affects anything related to gaming graphics.

Like Hapochi said, download DirectX 9.0, and Update it to 11.0 ( If you want to update... )

That was mentioned just in case he wants to know that ClearType is available.

But you're right, it's not required. DX9 is more important in this case.

Well, it works with Wine3d-s ddraw.dll (plus wined3d.dll and libwine.dll), but the on screen controls and mini-map are corrupted, and useless. It's kind of playable with hotkeys... A good solution still eludes me.
