Old dos game doesn't like dosbox

Trying to get one of my favorite dos games to run once more. I loved old turned based hex games like V For Victory. V4V requires either a 386, 486, Pentium with dos 5.0, 3MB ram, mouse and 512K video card. (Did I mention this was a REALLY old game?) I was able to keep this running up until a few years ago, by having both Windows 98se, and Windows XP. But that system died and I'm now running Windows 8.1 on a Toshiba laptop. I still do have a copy of Win 98se (also still have 95, 2000, and XP...skipped buying Millennium and Vista). Would rather avoid having to partitioning hard drive and installing Win98se. Rather used dosbox.

After I've started dosbox and then mounted my d:\ drive where the install cd is located, I attempt to run install.bat. The program comes back with an "unable to create c:\\GJS directory". It then asks me to hit any key to continue, but it's locked up and I end up having to close dosbox down. Suggestions?

First I would recommend a virtual machine (VM) using VMware Player, my favorite VM software. Install XP on it and have fun.

Other than that, I have made many games work on DosBox that others have said will not work. Make ISO, mount in DosBox, run the installer, back out, mount the drive you installed to, run the game executable. Works 99.9% of the time.

You can definitely install windows 98 se as suggested by popeye on a virtual machine but i would prefer virtualbox as it is a free software with sufficient features for your requirements
