I wonder if someone can help me as I feel like head butting a wall

I am trying to play Age of empires 2 on windows 8 and all is okay except the screen is narrow, I have read loads online about how to try and get the game to fit the screen but so far I have drawn a blank. If any of you could help me then I would be very grateful, Thanks :D

Hello "justme2012", welcome to EightForums.

Do you have a widescreen display? Can you tell us what resolution the game is running?

I don't think the game officially supports "widescreen" displays. I'm sure you've tried messing around in game settings.

You will need to "stumble" into an unofficial patch (or try to find the game configuration file (ending in .ini) and editing it to see what happens). Well, I've stumbled for you and came upon this (an unofficial game patch). Check it out and report back. :geek:

Thanks very much for your reply. Firstly I know very little apart from the basic running of computers etc, so I have tried to do what you suggested but some I have just not been able to.

I have messed about with the games settings and still no good, this may be wrong but the size of my last laptop running windows vista displayed the game perfectly. Could it be something to do with the fact I am now on windows 8?

The game runs three different resolutions and I have tried everyone, but no good.

Thanks very much for the link, I will try it now but im a little unsure to be honest how to "Unzip the contents of this folder into your Age of Empires II Installation folder (typically C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II\)".

Thanks very much for your help

The zipped files are in a "briefcase" which will need to be taken out in order to use them. All you need to do is double click the .zip file. It will open and it will show you two files and a folder; don't close that window.

What you will need to do is go to Computer, then click on Local Disk.

Go to Program Files (x86).

The find "Microsoft Games" folder, double click that then open Age of Empires II folder. Once there, you will need to drag those two files and folder into that Age of Empires II folder from that zipped file window that you haven't closed. Windows will tell you that those files already exist, you will need to tell Windows to replace all of those files and folders (when it asks for administrator permission provide it by clicking continue).

Then you can try running the game again, I'm not sure what to expect though; this is an unofficial patch that provides support for widescreen displays.
