Xbox 360 Wired Controller Driver For Windows 8 64-Bit?

I'm looking for a Windows 8-specific controller driver, if such a driver exists. I went to the Microsoft downloads website and a few other sites of theirs, and all I see are drivers for XP, Vista, and 7. I assume the drivers for 7 will work fine on Windows 8 But do I need to install it in 7 compatibility mode? Or is the 360 driver already included by default on 8, thereby precluding the need for installation? Dont want to manually install anything if I dont have to. I also know that I can sign into the Xbox Live app from the Metro screen, but that's probably just for using the app itself and not for playing games with a controller.

Also, does anyone know of a decent alternative to the official Microsoft drivers? I know that, by default, the buttons cant be remapped, except by using some 3rd-party program like Xpadder. I would also like to use the controller under Linux (Ubuntu, specifically) and am looking for drivers for that as well (of course, MS doesnt produce them).

Thanks for any help!

Yep I have the same thing. Xbox 360 Wired Controller and it works with Windows 7 64 bit drivers.
Software Downloads: Xbox 360 Controller for Windows

I have no idea if it automatically installed or not. I don't see why you don't just plug in the controller via USB and see.

I don't understand your question about Modern - Xbox Live App. This is how it works there is a games app that shows details about profile. Each game may or maybe uses Xbox live to store game data but will automatically sign in if you have Microsoft account enabled.

It really depends on the App if it uses a controller but if you had games in the past that used it. These games will continue to use it.

If you like to find something for Linux (ubuntu) you should post a question in Ubuntu Forums because they would know more about it.
Ask Ubuntu

I don't see why you made a thread without doing a search online but oh well.

When I plugged it in on 7 the driver auto-installed, but I was told i still needed to download drivers from MS. 8 does that as well. when i say preinstalled i mean, is the 360 controller driver already included as a default part of 8? kind of like how DirectX 10/11 is preinstalled on 7 and 8 and therefore no need to install them manually.

If it auto install and works good. I generally always go to the Manufacturer's website and download the latest driver. So I downloaded them. If you were told to download them and download them. Problem solved.

I had a similar problem. What I did was locate the xusb21.sys file on my Desktop running windows 7. Copied it then tranferred to the laptop running windows 8 in the same directory. C:\Windows\System32\Drivers. Then I went to the control panel which can be found on the desktop. You have to open the folder tab, click the drop down in the address bar, then select the desktop icon there.. Why?? not sure but anyways... Select the control panel tab. Then select small icons to find the control panel tab... Really annoyed with all the rabbit holes there. Choose the device manager. If your lucky the device will be in there with the yellow road sign containing and exclamation point. Right click that. Choose update driver then select browse my computer. Next choose let me choose let me pick from the list... Then if your lucky like me You'll find a list of drivers to choose from there. Make sure you choose the right one. Mine was a wired driver dated 7/25/2012. Windows gave me a warning about how it might mess up my system blah blah blah. I chose to install anyway and viola! My Controller's xbox button has a solid single green light in the upper hand corner and after calibrating from the devices and printers tab in the control panel. All the analog, directional pads, and buttons register and function. Wow that was a pain!. C'mon Bill! Lets get a driver for 8 signed so we don't have to pull Magic tricks out of our hats. Hope that helps because everything else I saw as a response to your problem didn't help me either.
