I have absolutely no bloody idea...
alright.. given how closely tied all the microsoft products are meant to be with windows 8.. what, is the extent of the interconnection with the xbox 360 and by extension xbox live?

I've been having the devil's own time trying to track down information on this.

You can log into Xbox Live in Windows 8 and see what your friends are doing in real-time. You can do messages, check your achievements, browse the library, change your account and avatar characteristics. You can use your Windows 8 device as a remote control and keyboard (for media stuff, for typing in codes, etc.).

With SmartGlass, you can control the Xbox. Send movies, TV shows, music to the Xbox and then on to the TV. SmartGlass also has additional gameplay features for upcoming games and some current games. Like in Dance Central 3, people can add songs to the playlist while people are still playing. Which means you don't have to stop the action to pick songs. In Forza Horizon, you use the SmartGlass device (your Windows 8 notebook, tablet, Phone, etc.) as an always-on GPS device. You can zoom in and out. You can pick destinations. You can filter locations. All without having to pause the game to bring up a map. Really neat stuff.

You can stream music and movies from your PC network. All my MP3s are spread across 3 PCs and they all send to the Xbox.

You also can use the Xbox as the front end for Windows Media Center (WMC Extender) so you can control your PC's TV tuners/DVR and have scheduling, recording, etc. WMC is also a media aggregator so you can use WMC to browse and play your library.
