the default Microsoft games are fine and fun:

  • Microsoft Solitaire Collection
  • Microsoft Minesweeper
  • Microsoft Wordament
  • Microsoft Taptiles
  • Microsoft Adera

But any free gems out there?

Pinball FX2 has a free table that's a lot of fun. Especially if you use a game controller like the Xbox 360 controller. And especially if you have a vertical monitor. If you're used to Pinball FX2 on the 360 or Zen Pinball on the Playstation, you know what to expect.

Sudoku Free is a good game.

Tetrablox is a barebones Tetris game that's decent in a pinch.

There a backgammon and checkers games - free with ads. If you don't want the ads (I tend to not notice them) you can pay for the "Premium" version. I have an older Backgammon gmae that's no longer free but I like the "Backgammon Pro" version better becuase it has a lot more options.

Every time I look in the Windows Store there seem to be more free games. Just refine the display to select Games and Free, and you should see a pretty good selection.

Check the Thread "Ingenify - Trivia Quiz for Windows 8" if you like "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?"-Style Games or just search for "Ingenify" in the Store (or "Trivia Quiz").

word twist is a good game. it's like wordament in that you form words from a group of letter. but there's no swiping involved. either touch or keyboard.

card games chest has stuff like spider solitaire. and while it's not beautiful like Microsoft's, it does allow ctrl+z for undoing! that's a feature that was part of the Windows 7 version but stripped from the Windows 8 version.

jetpack joyride is a fun platformer.

bubble star and bubble birds are similar to the classic bust a move.
