Update 17-Mar-2015:
Added OEM edition retrieval.
Original key and edition only appears after an upgrade (eg. Pro to WMC) .

Update 15-Apr-2015:
Added ability to retrieve key from backed-up windows image.
This requires redirection to the offline \Windows\System32\config\SOFTWARE hive - it has no file extension.
Eg output:

Update 16-Apr-2015:
Added Product key checker

Thanks for the update Craig! This will really help those that have/will upgrade, and take away some of the confusion, for example if they went from an OEM to Pro.

You're welcome, Cliff.

A quick note regarding MS edition naming.

OEM:NONSLP means System builder.
CoreConnected means "with Bing".

PS: Subsequent fixes:
The blank screen when cancelling retrieve from backup dialog.
Tooltips working
Removed OEM stuff from report when saving retrieval backup.

You're welcome, bud.

It also has Windows 7 support (Dependency: .Net 4.0 client framework - which comes through automatically through updates anyhow)

A new release has been uploaded. Changes are primarily aimed at those upgrading Windows 7 machines. Although it's fully compatible with Windows 7 in it's own right - ( with the .Net 4 client profile installed)

It's important to note the 'check product key' functionality is dependent on the underlying OS, thus only Windows 7 keys can be checked on Windows 7, as too Windows 8 keys on Windows 8 etc... only Windows 10 provides backward compatibiliy with Windows 8 keys.

How does the Product Key work with respect to the Install Key?

Is the Product Key coming from the windows install media or being read off the hardware somehow? Meaning if I use the same install USB (or CD) to install Windows on two computers, would each computer have the same Product Key?

Recently I reinstalled Windows 7 (clean install on a new SSD) and I had used your software to get the Install Key. But when I reinstalled, the Install Key would not work.
I have several "retail" WIN7 CDs (one 3 pack, and two retail CDs) and a Win8.1 upgrade Key, so I just started entering Install Keys (from each disk/download) until I found one that worked. I don't understand why the original Key used did not get accepted on the reinstall.

Sorry for the late reply...
The installed key is retrieved from the registry on which the particular edition has been installed.

Only Windows 8 OEM keys are retrieved from the hardware. None are retrieved from the install media.

Any key for the correct edition should work for installation. Have you used the product key checker to verify the edition assigned to each key? With the latest version, Windows 7 keys can be checked on Windows 8 and 10 as well...be advised it's slow though.

Help please download the file, I have registered on the site, but access to the link can not.
Could you send a file ShowKeyPlus(Version 1.0.5655).zip to my email address :
Thank you
You should to delete that email address. Cyber criminals are looking for just that with bot nets so they can STEAL your identity or sell it so your account will OVERFLOW with spam.

You just have to click the link, select save and it will download. When it's finished right click the zip file choose properties and unblock. then you can extract it to wherever you wish(desktop, or like me Documents).

Sorry I'm a bit late on this... But as Cliff says ;)

I assume you are from Ukraine, there are quite a few Russian sites using ShowkeyPlus... one is PCPortal who have mirrored it - in case that helps...
