    Joystick Issues with Windows 8

I wasn't sure If I should post it here or the gaming section so I do apologise on that. Basically I believe there is a game controller issue with Windows 8 RTM and Microsoft Flight Simulator X.

    For example:

If you was starting up a flight or flying and at random times the controller or joystick in my case will stop working inside the game. If you then went to Options > Settings > Controls within the games top menu bar. Then the actual controller would no longer be listed. Although if you went outside the game and into control panel and where it would list the game controllers and you started calibrating then it would still respond in that window. So it only happens within the game and it does it at random times.

It doesn't seem to be the USB power settings because they have been changed and it doesn't matter what USB port the Saitek X52 is plugged into. I actually first thought it was something related to the specific joystick I use but I have a friend of mine who also has FSX running on Windows 8 RTM with a different joystick (Non-Saitek) and has also experienced the issue.

So it does seem to be related with Windows 8 and the FSX game. Has anyone heard about any controller issues like this which are similar? I know Windows 8 isn't fully out yet but I thought would post. Would be nice if a solution did come up over the next few months to some what fix it :P

I have exactly the same issue with a Saitek Cyborg Evo model. Joystick disappears from FSX at a random time and is thereafter not listed anymore in the control settings menu. It is perfectly visible in device manager and Control Panel though. Tried the power settings for USB selective suspension, tried compatibility mode of FSX, tried running FSX as administrator, no luck whatsoever....

I'm having the same issue. Using X 52 Pro, with latest drivers on everything (since Win 8 launch),.
It was working flawlessly on windows 7, tried the USB Port fix, lasted longer, but still ended up with same result.
Did selective suspend method work for anyone?

I have tried everything but the problem persists. But what I discovered lately is that although I may "lose" the joystick most times I am able to "get it back" by doing some random clicking and minimizing among my other open windows programs and then go back to the sim. Sometimes it responds only in full screen mode at first but at least I don't have to quit my flights and the sim to restore it. The source of the glitch remains a mystery to me!

In case you still have this issue:

    On Win 8:

From Desktop mode I move to bottom left corner

    Right click for a menu
    Power Options
    Change Power Plan
    Advanced Options
    Choose USB
Then toggle the selective Suspend Option

BTW, that USB workaround only works for a very small number of FSX/Win 8 users, according to this extensive thread (500+ replies and 25,000+ views) at AVSim.net:

    Windows 8 - Joystick Megathread problem. - Page 22 - WIN8 OS Forum - The AVSIM Community - Page 22

I normally don't dredge up an old thread like this, but I thought I would ask if anyone using Win 8.1 RTM feels that this problem with the joystick loss has been eliminated? Many FSX and P3d users have been able to prevent the problem by using a 3rd party program (FSUIPC4, Linda, FSXAssist, etc.) which uses SimConnect to take control of the joystick from the sim. But it would be nice to not have to do this.

MS has stated on its website that both FSX (its own product, albeit an old one) and P3d (the successor, authored by Lockheed Martin as a licensee to MS) are both compatible with Win 8. Keep in mind that although FSX is legacy software, it has been updated significantly by 3rd party vendors, all due to the foresight of Phil Taylor and the other ACES Studio staff, who made FSX an open architecture app. They must have been doing something right, because the Microsoft Flight Simulator franchise sold well over 5 million copies during its lifetime.

But, those 'glory" days of MS appear on the wane. If MS was a star, it would probably be a red giant, well on its way to becoming a white dwarf. It's all the bad "little" decisions that have accumulated over the past years and now we are seeing the results of what happens when a corporate giant loses its way.
